Tenure Review and Promotion to Associate Professor

The mandatory promotion and tenure review usually occurs in the seventh year of appointment. Tenure review processes are guided largely by departmental bylaws and criteria; however, there are overarching campus policies and procedures to which all units must adhere.Ìý

It is the Boulder campus’ practice to increase the salary by $7,532 after the award of tenure, contingent upon available funds. Promotional raises are implemented/distributed at the start of the AY contract.Ìý

Votes / Ballots – Promotion and Tenure

The standard for Excellent exceeds the standard for Meritorious, as defined in the unit’s bylaws.

A finding of Excellent in Leadership/Service will not affect the tenure outcome, but is possible if the unit bylaws define the standards for Excellent in that category.

Promotion and Tenure Background

As stated in :

Tenure may be awarded only to faculty members who have demonstrated, at a minimum, meritorious performance in each of the three areas of: teaching (or librarianship), scholarly/creative work, and leadership and service (to the university, profession, and/or public); and demonstrated excellence in either teaching (or librarianship), or scholarly/creative work.
