Dr. Karen Auvinen has over 30 years teaching experience and currently teaches Film and Popular Culture for the Creative Minds RAP, where she is also Associate Director. She earned her PhD in English Literature & Creative Writing from the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee and her MA in poetry from the University of Colorado - Boulder.ÌýKaren’s writing has appeared in The New York Times as well as the Colorado Sun, Real Simple and numerous literary journals. Her fiction has twice been nominated for a Pushcart Prize and her poems have won two Academy of American Poet Awards. She is the 2024 winner of the Barry Lopez Creative Nonfiction Prize. Her classes focus on the way film and media reflect, reinforce, and circulate societal, personal, and cultural ideologies, and her interests focus on community building around the arts. She is a nature writer and the author of the memoir:ÌýÌýRough Beauty:Ìý Forty Seasons of MountainÌýLiving currently working on a novel, Sister House.
