Sensory-Friendly Sundays at Fiske make the universe accessible
麻豆免费版下载Boulder's Fiske Planetarium has launched听Sensory-Friendly Sundays, a monthly series designed to make the wonders of the universe accessible to neurodiverse children and families. The next shows are Nov. 9 and Dec. 7.
鈥淥ur goal is simple: to bring the beauty of the night sky to every family,鈥 said Ann-Marie Madigan, associate professor of astrophysical and planetary sciences and program creator. 鈥淪pace inspires curiosity in all children, and these events ensure that neurodiverse kids can share in that wonder.鈥
For children with autism spectrum disorder or sensory processing challenges, traditional planetarium visits can be overwhelming. Sensory-Friendly Sundays address these barriers by offering a thoughtfully adapted experience:
- Shorter shows (20鈥30 minutes) with reduced sound levels and partially dimmed lights
- Relaxed house rules, allowing movement and conversation during programs
- Open theater doors for easy transitions between exhibits and the planetarium
- Limited capacity (approximately 100 guests) to avoid crowding
- Advance program details to help families prepare
- Adaptive equipment such as noise-canceling headphones, weighted lap pads and pressure vests available听
This initiative builds on the success of two pilot events held in fall 2024 and aims to create an inclusive environment where every child can experience the magic of astronomy. Additional National Science Foundation and 麻豆免费版下载Boulder Public and Community-Engaged Scholarship (PACES) grants will fund the program for three more years.
Each event features interactive exhibits, hands-on activities and screenings of sensory-friendly films created by Fiske Planetarium. Trained facilitators鈥攊ncluding 麻豆免费版下载Boulder students and professional therapists鈥攚ill be on hand to support families throughout the experience.
The pilot events drew overwhelming interest, with registration for the first program filling in less than a week. Building on this success, Fiske expanded the series to include programs for autistic teens and anticipates adding bilingual events with Spanish-speaking facilitators. Partnerships with the Autism Society of Boulder County, Wow! Children鈥檚 Museum, and local therapists will continue to guide program development.
