The �鶹��Ѱ����� today announced a new merit-based scholarship program to recognize top entering Colorado freshmen for outstanding academic achievement.

Under the CU-Boulder Esteemed Scholars Program, a select group of entering Colorado resident freshmen will receive scholarships ranging from a total of $10,000 to $20,000 over four years based on a combination of their high school grade-point average and test scores.

“As the state’s flagship university, CU-Boulder has a special responsibility to ensure that Colorado’s best and brightest students enroll and graduate here, and move on to productive lives in Colorado,” said CU-Boulder Chancellor Philip P. DiStefano. “We’ve created this scholarship program with an investment of over $2 million, which we think is a down payment on the students’ futures as well as the state of Colorado’s.”

Administrators expect that approximately 20 percent of the fall 2013 Colorado resident class will receive one of the awards. All Colorado residents who apply as freshmen for the fall semester at CU-Boulder by the Jan. 15 admission application deadline will automatically be considered for the scholarship program.��Students who receive the award will be notified by the CU-Boulder Office of Admissions in their mailed admitted student packet.��

The awards are named in honor of CU’s first three presidents -- Joseph A. Sewall, Horace M. Hale and James H. Baker:

• The President Joseph A. Sewall award is a four-year, renewable scholarship for $5,000 a year, totaling $20,000. To qualify, students must have a 4.0 high school grade-point average and a 33 ACT or a 1440 SAT (Critical Reading, Math).

• The President Horace M. Hale award is a four-year, renewable scholarship for $3,500 a year, totaling $14,000. To qualify, students must have a 4.0 high school grade-point average and a 31 ACT or a 1350 SAT (Critical Reading, Math).

• The President James H. Baker award is a four-year, renewable scholarship for $2,500 a year, totaling $10,000. To qualify, students must have a 3.9 high school grade-point average and a 28 ACT or a 1240 SAT (Critical Reading, Math) or a 3.8 high school grade-point average and a 30 ACT or a 1310 SAT (Critical Reading, Math).
