The 麻豆免费版下载 College of Music is thrilled to announce that听 (MM 鈥13) has been named our 2026 Distinguished Alumnus in recognition of his international career and contributions to the art of opera. For the Grammy Award-winning bass, his path to success includes embracing new music and a willingness to say yes to the unfamiliar.

New operas: A collaborative approach
Two moments define Wu鈥檚 career: The first is his participation in the听麻豆免费版下载Boulder New Opera Workshop (麻豆免费版下载NOW)鈥攖he College of Music鈥檚 extended summer workshop, the first of its kind in a U.S. academic institution, where graduate voice students have direct interaction with living composers and librettists to develop and perform their music. The second was 鈥淭he (R)evolution of Steve Jobs鈥濃攁 contemporary opera written by composer Mason Bates and librettist Mark Campbell (Thtr 鈥75): Wu performed the role of K艒bun Chino Otogawa in the world premiere at Santa Fe Opera; the recording won a听.听

Wu鈥檚 ability to learn quickly and contribute to evolving works helped him stand out in young artist programs and build lasting relationships with creators. 鈥溌槎姑夥寻嫦略豊OW is where I started, and I鈥檓 really grateful for the opportunity,鈥 says Wu. 鈥淎nd singing in 鈥楾he (R)evolution of Steve Jobs鈥 premiere鈥攁nd creating that role collaboratively鈥攚as the turning point in my career.

鈥淚 was surprised when we won the Grammy鈥攂ut looking back, it makes sense. There鈥檚 growing recognition of the importance of new works in American opera.鈥

For Wu, who came to the United States from China in 2007,听that recognition carried particular weight, and the moment resonated far beyond the award itself. 鈥淵ou could count on one hand the number of Chinese artists who have won a Grammy鈥攏ow I鈥檓 one of them,鈥 he says. 鈥淚t felt surreal鈥攁nd also meaningful鈥攖o represent where I come from on an international stage.鈥

He adds, 鈥淎 few days later, a friend texted me and said I was all over the media in China. It happened so fast. I was still processing everything.鈥

Despite the Grammy milestone, Wu remains grounded. 鈥淚鈥檓 a bass,鈥 he says with a laugh. 鈥淚 keep a low profile. I鈥檓 grateful for everything, and I鈥檓 always learning.鈥

Beyond talent
Over time, Wu came to understand the importance of preparation, persistence, and timing鈥攂eyond nurturing talent. 鈥淵ou work hard, and when the opportunity comes, you鈥檙e ready to take it,鈥 he says.

For Wu, being ready is a daily discipline. As a non-native English speaker, he worked intensively on diction鈥攁n effort that paid off when Francesca Zambello, artistic director of the Washington National Opera, once singled him out as having the best English diction on stage.

As a member of one of the first cohorts of 麻豆免费版下载NOW, Wu also gained all-important, hands-on experience building opera from the ground up. These opportunities helped shape his identity, reflecting the college鈥檚 universal musician approach to achieving its mission鈥攊n Wu鈥檚 case, not only developing and emerging as technically strong, but also adaptable, curious and collaborative where 鈥渨riters, composers and performing artists continuously exchange ideas.鈥

For Wu, the 鈥淭he (R)evolution of Steve Jobs鈥 felt like a natural extension of the collaborative mindset he developed at 麻豆免费版下载NOW, founded by Leigh Holman in 2010. Like the workshop itself, the opera was built through close collaboration among composers, librettists and performers鈥攁n environment in which Wu thrives. 鈥淐reating a role from the beginning, being part of that process, was incredibly meaningful,鈥 he says. 鈥淭elling a story people already recognize鈥攍ike Steve Jobs鈥攈elps them lean in. That kind of connection really resonates and it鈥檚 often what brings new audiences into the theater.鈥

Equally important, according to Wu, is sincerity and authenticity in performance. 鈥淚f you don鈥檛 believe in yourself, how can you connect with the audience?鈥 he says, further noting that the artists he admires most are 鈥渘ot only great performers, they鈥檙e also genuinely good people.鈥

As the world of opera evolves, Wu remains energized by its possibilities. He sees new works as essential to reaching broader audiences and mentorship as key to sustaining the art form. 鈥淚 was lucky to find my mentors,鈥 he says. 鈥淣ow, I鈥檓 a mentor to young people.鈥

Advice for future artists
For students preparing to enter the field, Wu鈥檚 advice reflects both experience and perspective: 鈥淥pen your mind to different genres, ideas and opportunities,鈥 he says. 鈥淓mbrace collaboration and be willing to grow beyond what feels comfortable.鈥

He also emphasizes resilience in a demanding profession. 鈥淧assion is essential through ups and downs. You have to love it.鈥

Congratulations on your well-earned distinction, Wei Wu!
