Student Hourly Positions in Linguistics
The Department of LinguisticsÌýhires student hourly employees for a variety of purposes. Some faculty hire students to support research activities or for assistance with some courses. LinguisticsÌýmay also hire students to support the administration of the academic programs. Professor Ambrocio Gutierrez Lorenzo is looking to hire an undergraduate student to be responsible for the computational and technical aspects of the HUB project. In particular, they will ensure that the platform supporting the HUB, Mukurtu, is functioning properly and that all materials uploaded to the platform meet the required technical and formatting specifications. They will also monitor the platform for updates or technical changes that may need to be implemented to ensure that the HUB continues to function effectively.
The successful candidate will participate in meetings with the team members responsible for curating the HUB materials, providing technical guidance and addressing any issues that arise during the curation and uploading process. He will also identify and report technical concerns, recommend solutions when necessary, and help ensure the overall stability, accessibility, and functionality of the HUB. Professor Hannah Haynie is looking to hire a graduate student for assistance with the following:
- Transcribing Spanish audio in ELAN: This would require a Spanish speaker, though the phrases are fairly short and repetitive, and/or
- Correcting the phoneme boundaries in forced-aligned Praat textgrids (Spanish audio): This wouldn't necessarily require a Spanish speaker, but definitely someone familiar with reading spectrograms and manually adjusting textgrids/generally working in Praat.
