Welcome!

This research laboratory is led by Dr. Marina E. Vance, Associate Professor in theÌýÌýand Associate Director for Graduate Education in the Ìýat Â鶹Ãâ·Ñ°æÏÂÔØBoulder. Prof. Vance advises undergraduate and graduate students in both Mechanical and Environmental Engineering.

Our research focuses on air quality and aerosol science, particularly the experimental measurement of the physical properties of aerosols (small particle or droplets suspended in air) in both indoor and outdoor environments. Much of our work focuses on indoor air quality and explores the interplay between indoor and outdoor air, especially with regard to particulate matter. There is no established safe threshold for particulate matter inhalation and adverse effects can occur even at low levels.

Applications of our research

  • Assessing aerosol emissions from everyday sources
  • Evaluating the physical and chemical transformations of aerosols indoors and outdoors
  • Evaluating measurement methods and instrumentation for airborne particles
  • Developing and evaluating indoor air cleaning strategies and technologies
  • Studying human exposure air pollutants and strategies for reducing health risks

Our mission is to perform experimental aerosol science that advances knowledge and leads to positive impacts on human health and the environment. We welcome inquiries from prospective graduate students who are interested in pursuing a PhD or Master’s degree at Â鶹Ãâ·Ñ°æÏÂÔØBoulder in environmental engineering, mechanical engineering, or related fields.
