Unveiling the Dawn of Massive Galaxies with the James Webb Space Telescope

March 5 & 6, 2026 at 7pm

Galaxies are vast collections of stars, gas, and dark matter that trace the underlying structure of our universe. For decades, astronomers have been piecing together the story of how the first galaxies grew and transformed into the massive ellipticals we see today. The , launched in late 2021, has already revolutionized this field: its deep, sharp view into the infrared lets us directly glimpse the era of cosmic dawn. In this talk, we鈥檒l dive into one of the biggest surprises from JWST so far: the discovery of enormous quiescent galaxies astonishingly early in cosmic history. How did these cosmic behemoths form so quickly, and why did their star formation stop so soon after the Big Bang? I鈥檒l conclude with a preview of what the coming years of JWST observations may hold, including a sneak peek MINERVA, a survey I鈥檓 leading at 麻豆免费版下载to map distant galaxies in unprecedented detail.

Dr. Wren Suess is an Assistant Professor of Astrophysics at CU. Her research focuses on the growth and transformation of galaxies across cosmic time, especially the evolution of galaxy sizes and star formation rates. She leads several ongoing surveys with JWST, including MINERVA and the 鈥淢edium Bands, Mega Science鈥 survey. Wren was an undergraduate student at 麻豆免费版下载before completing her PhD at Berkeley and postdoctoral work at Stanford; she鈥檚 been delighted to return to Boulder long-term. In her free time, Wren is a backpacker, rock climber, potter, and avid hobby collector.听

From听Boulder to the Beyond: NASA鈥橲 Search for Life Outside the Solar System

April 2 & 3, 2026 at 7pm

In the last three decades, the explosion of exoplanet discoveries has demonstrated that, on average, every star in the Milky Way hosts a planetary system. With so many planets now discovered, our next challenge is characterizing the atmospheres of those planets to assess their potential habitability and search for the signs of active biology. In this talk, Dr. France will highlight recent exoplanet discoveries and describe the role that the University of Colorado鈥檚 Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics (LASP) is playing in developing the science, hardware, and training the next generations of scientists and engineers for NASA鈥檚 upcoming flagship exoplanet mission, the (HWO). Dr. France will describe the HWO mission and how the University of Colorado is developing hardware on small satellites and rocket missions, and how we use these missions to train the students who will lead NASA鈥檚 future missions like HWO and beyond.

Bio: Kevin France is a professor in the University of Colorado鈥檚 and in the Department of Astrophysical and Planetary Sciences. He is an expert on space instruments for astrophysics and the study of extrasolar planets. He had led approximately 10 NASA rocket and small satellite missions at LASP, works extensively with the Hubble Space Telescope, and is engaged with NASA鈥檚 development of future observatories to find habitable planets beyond the solar system.
