Substance Use & Gambling Support

Everyone鈥檚 relationship with substances and gambling is different. Whether you want to better understand your habits, reduce potential harms, make a change or pursue recovery, Counseling & Psychiatric Services (CAPS) offers confidential, nonjudgmental support based on your goals and what matters to you.

You don鈥檛 need to have an addiction, be ready to stop using substances or change your gambling behaviors to talk with someone.

Substance Use Support

Students may use alcohol or other substances for many reasons鈥攖o socialize, celebrate, cope with stress or difficult emotions, connect with others or simply out of curiosity. College can also bring greater access to substances and new social pressures around their use.

There isn鈥檛 one experience that defines a 鈥渉ealthy鈥 or 鈥渦nhealthy鈥 relationship with substances. It can be helpful to understand your own patterns, how substance use is affecting your life and whether your current habits align with what you want for yourself.

When to Get Support for Substance Use

You don鈥檛 need to wait until something serious happens to ask for support. Consider talking with someone if you:

  • Are curious about your substance use or wondering whether you want to make a change.
  • Use substances more often or in larger amounts than you intended.
  • Have tried to cut back and found it difficult.
  • Experience impacts on academics, relationships, finances, health or safety.
  • Rely on substances to manage stress, anxiety, sleep or difficult emotions.
  • Have experienced blackouts, injuries, unsafe situations or other experiences you don鈥檛 want to repeat.
  • Spend more time, energy or attention on substance use than you would like.
  • Want to reduce potential risks while continuing to use.
  • Are considering cutting back, stopping or are interested in recovery.

How CAPS Can Help with Substance Use

If substance use starts interfering with school, relationships, responsibilities or daily life, additional support may be helpful.

Seeking support doesn鈥檛 commit you to a specific goal. You may want to understand your habits, reduce potential harms, cut back, take a break, stop using or explore recovery. CAPS providers can help you consider your options and make choices that align with your goals, values and well-being.

Gambling and Sports Betting Support

Gambling and sports betting can be recreational activities, but they can also affect your finances, academics, relationships and mental health. CAPS offers a supportive, nonjudgmental place to talk about your gambling or betting habits and decide what, if anything, you want to change.

When to Get Support for Gambling

Consider talking with someone if you:

  • Gamble more often or spend more money than you intended.
  • Frequently think about gambling or your next bet.
  • Try to win back money you鈥檝e lost, sometimes called 鈥渃hasing losses.鈥
  • Borrow money or experience gambling-related debt.
  • Skip classes or notice changes in your academic performance.
  • Pull away from friends, activities or responsibilities.
  • Experience stress, anxiety, guilt or depression related to gambling.

You don鈥檛 have to wait until gambling becomes a serious problem to ask for help.

CAPS offers individual therapy with clinicians trained to support students with gambling-related concerns.

How to get started with CAPS

If you want to talk about substance use, gambling or sports betting, start with a CAPS screening appointment. This is a brief, one-on-one meeting where you can discuss what鈥檚 going on, what you want help with and your options for support.

Depending on your goals and needs, your care plan may include additional CAPS services, campus resources or care in the community.

Schedule a screening appointment:

  • Online: Schedule a telehealth screening through the . You must be in Colorado at the time of a telehealth appointment.
  • In person: Visit CAPS for a drop-in screening from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Support If You鈥檙e Concerned About Someone Else

Substance use and gambling can also affect friends, family members and others close to someone who is struggling.

If you鈥檙e concerned about a 麻豆免费版下载Boulder student鈥檚 alcohol or drug use, contact CAPS at 303-492-2277 for a consultation. CAPS can help you learn about available services and discuss ways to talk with the student about your concerns.

Court-Mandated Substance Use Evaluations

Students who have legal requirements related to substance use may be referred to CAPS for a court-mandated substance use evaluation.

During the evaluation, a licensed CAPS provider will review your biological, psychological and social history to better understand factors that may affect your substance use and well-being. The evaluation also includes assessment tools and, when appropriate, a diagnosis.

After the evaluation, the provider will prepare a report that includes relevant history, any diagnosis and recommendations. The report will be shared with the referring judge or magistrate.

Court-mandated evaluations are not covered by student fees or tuition and must be paid out of pocket.
