In spring 2025, the Sustainability Research Initiative (SRI) started a mission to harness the collective expertise of �鶹��Ѱ��Boulder’s diverse academic community to address pressing sustainability challenges.

On Oct. 8–9, the SRI will host the inaugural �鶹��Ѱ��Boulder Sustainability Research Summit, a two-day event highlighting the diversity and depth of sustainability research across campus. Free and open to the public, the summit aims to foster connections among researchers and external partners and share �鶹��Ѱ��Boulder research with the Front Range community and beyond.

The summit will create opportunities for students to see what researchers are working on and explore undergraduate research opportunities. �鶹��Ѱ��Boulder researchers can identify potential interdisciplinary collaborations, while external partners can discover opportunities to work with �鶹��Ѱ��Boulder on a variety of sustainability challenges. Investors can gain insight into what �鶹��Ѱ��Boulder researchers are developing and what is in the pipeline, from discovery to implementation.

“The Sustainability Research Summit will highlight the amazing work our researchers and students are doing and create a space for new synergies to emerge,” Jane Zelikova, executive director of SRI said. “Connecting �鶹��Ѱ��Boulder’s world-class research capabilities with industry and public sector partners is also a priority.”

The summit will provide space to hear from corporate, philanthropic, state and federal partners and will explore partnerships to leverage �鶹��Ѱ��Boulder’s research expertise and advance sustainability in practice.

“As we continue to navigate the pressing challenges of climate change and environmental stewardship, this summit is an exciting opportunity to connect like-minded researchers and partners to foster innovative solutions, inspire bold action and continue to lead the way in sustainability practices locally and globally,” said Andrew Mayock, vice chancellor for sustainability at �鶹��Ѱ��Boulder. “�鶹��Ѱ��Boulder is world-renowned for our outstanding research in climate science, and this summit will be a chance to showcase that work and allow for the kind of collaboration that translates academic research into real-world impact.”

�鶹��Ѱ��Boulder has long been recognized for its leadership in Earth and climate science, engineering, business and sustainability research more broadly, including a ranking in the top 10 for institutions participating in climate science research. Building on that foundation, the Sustainability Research Summit is expected to become a landmark event at the university, advancing �鶹��Ѱ��Boulder’s leadership in sustainability.

�鶹��Ѱ��Boulder Provost Ann Stevens will join academic leaders from Colorado State University and the University of Northern Colorado, along with high-tech leaders from key sectors of northern Colorado’s economy at a special forum at UNC in Greeley on the morning of Aug. 4.

Hosted by the northern Colorado business publication BizWest, the Northern Colorado Mid-Year Economic Forum will be a half-day session that includes guest speakers from tech sectors like laser fusion, aerospace, bioscience and quantum, and a forum with higher ed leaders focusing on the challenges and opportunities for Colorado’s higher education institutions to impact the state’s economy.

“I’m looking forward to joining my colleagues from our state’s higher education system to talk about the exciting things on the horizon for Colorado’s economy,” said Stevens. “There are inspiring stories to tell about our students in the workforce, tech spinoffs arising from �鶹��Ѱ��Boulder research, and the partnerships among our institutions that transform lives and our economy,” said Stevens.

BizWest Owner and Publisher Jeff Nuttall said the forum is designed to explore, among a variety of topics, the role and impact that �鶹��Ѱ��Boulder, Colorado State University, the University of Northern Colorado and the state’s community colleges have on workforce development, as well as the role that �鶹��Ѱ��and CSU play in “creating a symbiotic relationship with our federal laboratories in Colorado.”

“We like to highlight this for our public and private sector leaders who read us every day: that this is an important ecosystem,” said Nuttall.

The panel will be moderated by Ann Hutchinson, president and CEO of the Fort Collins area Chamber Commerce.

Registration is open for the inaugural Right Here, Right Now Global Youth Climate Summit, a free 24-hour livestream on World Environment Day, June 5, co-hosted by �鶹��Ѱ��Boulder and partners worldwide.

The global event will move across time zones, spotlighting youth-led climate work and human rights initiatives from universities and organizations around the world.

As part of the program, �鶹��Ѱ��Boulder will host a live, interactive session from 2 to 4 p.m. MT. The workshop will feature student projects from the Eco-imagination for Sustainability and Creative Climate Communication courses—including eco-imagining films, sustainable fashion campaigns and climate comedy, highlighting how storytelling and creative expression can engage new audiences.

Participants will be able to explore student work, take part in creative exercises and gain practical approaches to climate communication, including a live comedy workshop.

“An equitable, survivable and thriving world is possible, but it must first be imagined,” said Beth Osnes-Stoedefalke, a �鶹��Ѱ��Boulder professor who taught and co-taught the courses behind these student projects. “Young people are uniquely positioned to lead that work.”

The fully-online format expands global access while reducing travel-related emissions. Participants must register for the livestream to attend, including the �鶹��Ѱ��Boulder session.

The summit is co-hosted by Saïd Business School at the University of Oxford and UN Human Rights, with universities worldwide participating. �鶹��Ѱ��Boulder’s involvement is led by the SPIKE Center for Sustainability Education, the Center for African and African American Studies and the Conference on World Affairs.

On UN World Environment Day, �鶹��Ѱ��Boulder will co-host the inaugural Right Here, Right Now Global Youth Climate Summit, a 24-hour livestream event engaging young people around the world on climate action and human rights.

The Conference on World Affairs (CWA) will mark more than the start of its 78th year, it will officially kick off �鶹��Ѱ��Boulder’s 150th anniversary celebration. The university invites students, faculty, staff and the broader community to reflect on the university’s history, examine its present impact and imagine the next big ideas that will shape the future.

As the opening chapter of this yearlong celebration, CWA 2026 features special anniversary programming that connects �鶹��Ѱ��Boulder’s past to the challenges and opportunities of today—from higher education’s role in democracy to the future of aerospace. On April 14, a special panel will feature several previous presidents and chancellors as they discuss how leadership has changed across the eras.

Free and open to all, CWA’s kickoff of the 150th anniversary underscores �鶹��Ѱ��Boulder’s long-standing commitment to inclusive dialogue, civic engagement and ideas that matter, locally and globally.
