As fall sports are winding down and winter sports are starting, a number of �鶹��Ѱ��varsity programs are excelling in competition.

Soccer, volleyball, and cross-country are competing in NCAA championships or soon will be. Men's and women's basketball are both fielding strong teams that will be fun to watch.

Soccer

�鶹��Ѱ��women’s soccer won their 16th game of the season, a program record, in thrilling fashion with a double-overtime win over Utah State in the first game of the NCAA Tournament on Nov. 14. They'll now hit the road to face Xavier University in a second-round tilt that will be played in East Lansing, Michigan, on Nov. 20.

Record: 16-3-3 (currently a 3-seed)

Recap: Beat Utah Valley in the first round of the NCAA Tournament 2–1 (two overtimes) on Friday night.

Volleyball

The Buffs volleyball team has eclipsed 20 wins for the second time since 2017 and has been particularly dangerous against their fellow ranked teams, racking up four wins versus ranked opponents so far this season.

Record: 21–6 (currently ranked 23rd in the country; new rankings come out this afternoon)

Recap: Beat No. 16 T�鶹��Ѱ��3-2 on Thursday.
Lost to No. 8 Arizona State 2–3 on Saturday.

Nov. 21 at the University of Cincinnati
Nov. 29: at home versus Brigham Young University

By the way: The volleyball is on the bubble for hosting an NCAA tournament game. �鶹��Ѱ��will be notified if it's a host site.

Cross-Country

Both the men's and women's cross country teams had strong showings at the NCAA Mountain Regional Championships and will be competing in the NCAA Championships this Saturday.

The men will be making their 55th appearance in the national meet and 33rd in a row, the third-longest active streak in the nation. The women will be heading to the championships for the 34th time and will be making their 31st appearance over the last 33 years.

Rankings: Men–6/Women–16 (new rankings will come out on Nov. 18)

Tune in: Nov. 22: The men's and women's teams will be competing at the NCAA Cross Country Championships in Columbia, Missouri. The women will race at 9 a.m., MT, with the men to follow. It will be broadcast on ESPN+.

Women's Basketball

JR Payne's Buffs are again loaded with talent and are expected to be a force in the Big 12 this year. Colorado is coming off a 77–45 thrashing of Portland State University on Sunday that featured a career-high 19 points from freshman forward Logan Greer, who is one of many newcomers to watch this season.

Men's Basketball

The �鶹��Ѱ��men's basketball team is off to a perfect 3–0 start after beating Big East Conference opponents Providence 97–88 at the �鶹��Ѱ��Events Center last Friday. The Buffaloes are loaded with exciting young talent, including electric freshman point guard Isaiah Johnson, who scored 24 second-half points in his �鶹��Ѱ��debut in a win over Montana State.

It's an exciting time for Buffs sports fans with three fall teams poised for post-season competition and two winter teams starting their seasons on a hot note.

The Buffaloes will have a new field on which to roam this fall, as the �鶹��Ѱ��Boulder Athletic Department has installed new artificial turf at Folsom Field. The month-long project was completed at the end of June and will be on full display for fans when �鶹��Ѱ��hosts Georgia Tech in the football home opener on Aug. 29.

Folsom now features AstroTurf’s RootZone 3D3 system, a premium synthetic turf system known for its player safety, durability and natural look. The new surface features a stable playing surface designed to reduce field related wear and tear while meeting stringent safety standards.

The new field also includes a 20-millimeter shock pad manufactured by Brock, a Boulder-based company that also has created a revolutionary infill that is safer for athletes and the environment. Unlike the rubber infill that is commonly used in artificial fields, the product, BrockFILL, is composed of small pine pellets created through a patented process in a zero-waste U.S. factory.

The wood pellets provide better traction, help keep the field cooler and are substantially better for the environment than their rubber counterparts because the organic components are recyclable when the turf needs to be replaced. The wood pellets also don’t release chemicals into the air or leach into rainwater like crumb rubber can. Folsom’s BrockFILL field pellets contain approximately 40,000 pounds of sequestered carbon, which is the approximate equivalent of keeping 145,000 pounds of CO2 from entering the atmosphere.

“We are excited to update the playing surface at Folsom Field with a field that considers athlete safety and the environment through a partnership with Brock, which is a Boulder company,” said Athletic Director Rick George. “This new field will provide a consistent playing surface year-round, while also providing added opportunities to host more events like concerts at Folsom Field. It also looks great!”

The result is a field that plays like natural grass, delivers the firmness and speed athletes need, and eliminates concerns about crumb rubber making its way into Boulder Creek."

The new turf will also have a significant reduction in maintenance impacts, including water use, fuel for equipment and fertilizer.

Folsom Field featured artificial turf from 1971 to 1998 before switching to natural grass. Nearly 70% of teams in the Football Bowl Subdivision play on an artificial surface. Most importantly, the new field has been approved by Ralphie, who will still perform her pre-game and halftime runs on the field every home game.

The new state-of-the-art surface combines safety, durability and eco-friendly features while providing the flexibility to host more events at the iconic stadium.
