Brigid Mark is a Ph.D. Candidate whose research, teaching, and service focuses on the intersection of environmental sustainability and social justice.Ìý

Drawing on a total of eight years of participant observation, 75 interviews, and content analysis, her dissertation examines how Native-led movements navigate contexts of land dispossession to rebuild cultural and ecological relationships with the land. Some of her dissertation research has already been published in a top sociological journal, Social Problems [IF: 2.5].

Contrasting extractive research with Indigenous communities, long-term relationships with Native movements affect each step of her research process, from solidarity work and co-developing questions with Indigenous organizers to reviewing outlines of my chapters before publication. With Native collaborators and a Native artist, she co-produced an illustrated Ìýtranslating research findings into an accessible resource for educators and activists on engaging in solidarity in accountable ways.

She has designed and taught two of her own classes — environment and society listed in Sociology and climate action planning listed in Geography and Mechanical Engineering. Engaging undergraduate students with applied projects on the Â鶹Ãâ·Ñ°æÏÂÔØcampus climate action plan, the second course won the Â鶹Ãâ·Ñ°æÏÂÔØCampus SustainabilityÌýAward for Student Leadership.

Her collaborative scholarship ranges from analyzing Indigenous and youth climate justice movements at the U.N Climate Negotiations (Journal of Human Rights and the Environment 2020; Climate and Development 2023), considering police violence as environmental injustice (Environmental Justice 2021),Ìýsynthesizing barriers and opportunities to Native-led renewable energy (Energy Research and Social Science 2023), and more. She also has built quantitative skills as the Data Manager and Analyst for Social Science Extreme Events Research (SSEER) network, updating a map of social scientists studying hazards and disasters, and analyzing these data for an annual census report, using Rstudio and Rmarkdown.

Her service includes membership on the Â鶹Ãâ·Ñ°æÏÂÔØClimate Action Plan steering committee and equity subcommittee, Sociology Department Strategic Action for Equity Committee, and volunteering with community non-profits advancing social and environmental justice.Ìý

Brigid plans to defend her dissertation in May of 2027. She holds master's in Sociology from Â鶹Ãâ·Ñ°æÏÂÔØBoulder and a bachelor's in Environmental Studies and Biology from the College of Saint Benedict and St. John’s University.
