I challenged myself by coding an interactive documentary website that simulates how media algorithms shape opinions on gun control, guiding viewers toward clips they agree with to reflect the division created by personalized social media content.

Born and raised in Boulder, I’m graduating with a double major in Documentary Media Production and Advertising Strategy. I’m driven by curiosity about people and culture, whether that means traveling, making documentaries, or digging into consumer behavior and the stories behind it. I’m especially drawn to storytelling in all forms and figuring out what actually connects with people. After graduation, I’ll be spending a month traveling through Southeast Asia, then hopefully jumping into the creative and production side of advertising.

For my capstone, I wanted to push myself beyond traditional documentary work and create something I had never made before: an interactive documentary website. The project explores how media algorithms shape the way people understand major social and political issues, using the gun control debate as its central example. As viewers move through the site, they are asked to agree or disagree with a series of clips. Based on their responses, the experience begins feeding them content that increasingly aligns with their existing views. By structuring the project this way, I wanted to recreate the narrowing effect of social media algorithms and show how personalized content can reinforce beliefs, limit exposure to opposing perspectives, and deepen division. More than just a website, the project is meant to act as both a documentary and a commentary on the systems that increasingly shape public opinion.
