Âé¶¹Ãâ·Ñ°æÏÂÔØBoulder and Boulder police release names of officers involved in fatal shooting on Âé¶¹Ãâ·Ñ°æÏÂÔØcampus

The Âé¶¹Ãâ·Ñ°æÏÂÔØ and the City of Boulder police departments today released the names of the officers involved in the Oct. 5 fatal shooting of a man wielding a machete on the Âé¶¹Ãâ·Ñ°æÏÂÔØBoulder campus. The CUPD officer is Clay Austin. He has been an officer with CUPD for almost four years. The BPD officer’s name is Jason Connor. He is a three-year veteran of the department. Both officers are on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation, which is consistent with department policies.

Âé¶¹Ãâ·Ñ°æÏÂÔØBoulder police received a 911 call at 9:13 a.m. and Officer Austin immediately responded to the scene. In total, 14 CUPD officers responded during the duration of the call. Boulder police became aware of the incident at 9:16 a.m., after multiple 911 calls came into the Boulder Police Department Communication Center. Nine Boulder police officers immediately responded to assist the Âé¶¹Ãâ·Ñ°æÏÂÔØPolice Department. When officers encountered the armed suspect, he did not comply with verbal commands and then advanced on officers. It has been confirmed that both Officer Austin and Officer Connor discharged their firearms.

The Boulder County Investigation Team is the lead investigation team for this incident. This team is made up of investigators from various law enforcement agencies throughout Boulder County. Both the Âé¶¹Ãâ·Ñ°æÏÂÔØ Police Department and the Boulder Police Department participate in this system of investigation to ensure objectivity in cases where officers use lethal force.

Investigators believe there are likely still witnesses who they have not talked with and are asking individuals who were in the area when the incident occurred to call Sgt. Brian Lindsey with the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office at 303-441-4917.
