The department welcomes Rebecca Machen as a new Teaching Assistant Professor. Rebecca earned her PhD in Curriculum and Instruction with an emphasis in mathematics education from �鶹��Ѱ��Boulder in 2024.

Before coming to �鶹��Ѱ��Boulder, Rebecca taught mathematics at both the secondary and community college levels and worked in the University of Iowa College of Engineering, where she directed tutoring programs, advised engineering students, and supported students transitioning into college mathematics. At �鶹��Ѱ��Boulder, her previous work has spanned mathematics instruction, student success, curriculum development, and educational research.

Rebecca's professional interests include active-learning approaches to mathematics instruction, supporting student belonging and success in introductory mathematics, and the thoughtful integration of generative AI into mathematics teaching and learning. She is particularly interested in how classroom structures, relationships, and emerging technologies can help students become more confident and engaged mathematical thinkers.

Rebecca is also the Principal Investigator of a recently funded $2 million National Science Foundation S-STEM award at �鶹��Ѱ��Boulder. Beginning in the 2027–2028 academic year, the project will provide scholarships and a comprehensive network of academic and professional supports for undergraduate STEM students with financial need. The project brings together many of Rebecca's long-standing interests in mathematics education, student success, STEM persistence, and creating pathways that help students thrive at the university.

The department is pleased to welcome Dr. Sachi Hashimoto as new Assistant Professor at the Department of Mathematics. Dr. Hashimoto received her PhD from Boston University in 2022. After that, she spent one year at the Max Planck Institute for Mathematics in the Sciences in Leipzig, Germany, followed by three years at Brown University.

Dr. Hashimoto studies arithmetic geometry from a computational point of view. She is interested in the interplay between arithmetic questions, like, how can we find all the rational solutions to a polynomial equation, and their geometric properties, like the geometry of the solution set; she investigates these questions in particular using computer algebra systems.

Janos Englander was elected a full member of Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Honor Society in 2026. Sigma Xi is the world’s largest general research honor society. It is an
international, multidisciplinary organization for research scientists and engineers.

Over the course of the Society’s distinguished history, more than 200 members have won the Nobel Prize and many more have earned election to the National Academy of Sciences and National Academy of Engineering.

Zheng Xiao received his PhD in 2022 at Michigan State University, under the supervision of Aaron D. Levin. His research interests include number theory, arithmetic geometry and complex hyperbolic geometry, focusing on classical Diophantine geometry problems such as the distribution of rational and integral points on algebraic varieties, value distribution of holomorphic and meromorphic maps in Nevanlinna theory, and other topics related to Vojta's conjecture.
