Our next 1L spotlight is Farees Choudhury. Farees is Bangladeshi, but was born and raised in Singapore. He graduated with a degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2021, and has worked as a Patent Engineer/Analyst at Cardinal Intellectual Property (IP law firm) since 2021.ÌýÌý
Meet the class of 2029’s Farees Choudhury!Ìý
What inspired you to pursue a law degree?Ìý
FC: I worked at a patent law firm (Cardinal Intellectual Property, Inc.) as a Patent Engineer/Analyst for the last 5 years and fell in love with Patent/Intellectual Property after completing over 650 cases. I believe that pursuing a law degree in Patent Law is the next natural step for my career as I would love to be on the frontline in helping scientists, innovators, and companies get patents/intellectual property rights on their inventions. I also believe that Patent Law would stimulate and cultivate my scientific mind and passion in helping people.ÌýÌý
What are your hobbies outside of work and school?ÌýÌý
FC: Martial Arts (MMA, Muay Thai, BJJ, etc.), travelling, cats, hiking, health, reading, music, movies, hiking, outdoors, food, cooking, Yoga, meditation, scientific innovation, hanging out with friends and family, eating.ÌýÌý
What is your educational background and/or what was your career before deciding to come to law school?Ìý
FC: I graduated as a Chemical Engineer from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2021, after which I worked as a Patent Engineer/Analyst at Cardinal Intellectual Property (IP law firm) from July 2021 to July 2026 to reject (and sometimes allow) patent applications for a wide variety of the newest scientific inventions (medicines, methods, systems, apparatuses, formulations, compositions, etc.) from many industries (oil & gas, pharmaceuticals, food & beverage, energy, consumer goods, etc.). Doing so helped me protect the IP rights for scientists with previously patented inventions.ÌýÌý
Why did you choose Colorado law?ÌýÌý
FC: I love Colorado (been living here since August 2024) due to its people and nature. I love Â鶹Ãâ·Ñ°æÏÂÔØBoulder Law because of the IP law and environmental law programs it presents. As I have friends who have graduated from Colorado Law and are still students there, I have heard nothing but great things about the career opportunities, faculty members, networking events, diversity, resources, student community, environment, and collaborative culture at Â鶹Ãâ·Ñ°æÏÂÔØLaw.ÌýÌý
What are you most looking forward to this upcoming academic year?Ìý
FC: I am excited to learn from and meet many individuals of excellence (including student leaders, students, and faculty members), to expand my knowledge in the field of law (in every aspect), to grow as an individual, and to work as hard as I can to be the best law school student that I can possibly be. I am most excited to collaborate with people and form strong friendships professionally and personally.ÌýÌý
