Quantum Chemical Physics Research Areas

Laser-cooled atomic ions can serve as an ultra cold thermal bath for molecular ions. By performing chemical reactions with these molecules in an ultra-high vacuum environment, we can probe fundamental chemical physics at the quantum level.

The second generation ion trap system can be cryogenically cooled to 4 Kelvin. This offers ro-vibrationally cold ions and neutral collision partners, which open the doors to precision spectroscopy of reaction products to gain insight into structure and quantum states after a reaction has occurred.
