Here鈥檚 how 麻豆免费版下载Engineering is getting us there.</h2><p><span>C</span>U Engineering researchers are working to solve one of the biggest challenges facing renewable energy: affordable, reliable energy storage.</p><p>In 2025, solar and wind accounted for roughly 90 percent of newly installed U.S. power capacity, according to a report by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. While renewables offer the most affordable source of new electricity and deliver emissions-free power, their dependence on weather and daylight makes energy storage essential to grid reliability, said Mike Toney, a professor of chemical and biological engineering.</p><div class="feature-layout-callout feature-layout-callout-medium"><div class="ucb-callout-content"><p class="text-align-center lead"><strong>鈥淏etter batteries will be critical to shifting our energy infrastructure away from fossil fuels.鈥</strong></p></div></div><p>鈥淭here鈥檚 a need for inexpensive and safe energy storage to support renewable energy,鈥 Toney said. 鈥淏etter batteries will be critical to shifting our energy infrastructure away from fossil fuels.鈥</p><h2>Challenges</h2><p>Current battery technologies rely on materials with ethical, geopolitical and safety concerns, with end-of-life disposal posing environmental risks, Toney said.</p><p>Lithium-ion batteries are popular because they鈥檙e affordable, widely available, and can smooth out short-term fluctuations. But as more renewable energy is added to the grid, these batteries will be less suited to its demands, said Bri-Mathias Hodge, a professor of electrical, computer and energy engineering who uses computational simulations to study reliable and economical future power systems.</p><p>Hodge said that because solar and wind output change rapidly with weather and time of day, within the next decade the grid will need longer-duration storage capable of delivering electricity instantly.</p> <div class="align-right image_style-small_500px_25_display_size_"> <div class="imageMediaStyle small_500px_25_display_size_"> <img loading="lazy" src="/engineering/sites/default/files/styles/small_500px_25_display_size_/public/2026-05/battery_cue_illustration_v4.png?itok=3-zYTXpi" width="375" height="549" alt="Wind power illustration"> </div> </div> <p>鈥淢ost researchers agree it needs to be longer than 10 hours,鈥 Hodge said.</p><h2><strong>Beyond lithium</strong></h2><p>Toney鈥檚 lab is working on one possible solution. He and his team study how electrolytes function in aqueous zinc-metal batteries, which use widely available materials 鈥 unlike lithium-ion batteries. They鈥檙e also researching sodium-ion batteries, which are inexpensive and also use abundant materials.</p><p>Associate Professor Chunmei Ban鈥檚 research focuses on what she calls 鈥渂eyond lithium鈥 battery technologies, including sodium and solid-state batteries for renewable energy and electric vehicles.</p><p>Ban, a mechanical engineer, explains that much of the supply chain for lithium batteries, including raw materials and manufacturing equipment, is concentrated outside the U.S. This makes it difficult for the U.S. to independently produce lithium batteries at scale and creates vulnerabilities in resource and technology access.</p><p>鈥淒eveloping new battery materials is a very challenging and resource-intensive process,鈥 Ban said. 鈥淧rogress takes time because creating and testing new materials requires extensive modeling, material optimization and trial and error. Out of millions of possible compounds, only a small number are currently identified as suitable for batteries.鈥</p><div class="feature-layout-callout feature-layout-callout-medium"><div class="ucb-callout-content"><p class="text-align-center lead"><strong>鈥淒eveloping new battery materials is a very challenging and resource-intensive process.鈥</strong></p></div></div><p>Despite these challenges, Ban鈥檚 lab has successfully developed several new materials in under three years. They are being commercialized through her lab鈥檚 spinoff company, Mana Batteries.</p> <div class="align-left image_style-small_500px_25_display_size_"> <div class="imageMediaStyle small_500px_25_display_size_"> <img loading="lazy" src="/engineering/sites/default/files/styles/small_500px_25_display_size_/public/2026-05/battery_cue_illustration_v4%202.png?itok=Ohep4_PM" width="375" height="333" alt="Solar panel illustration"> </div> </div> <p>These materials, such as new electrolytes for sodium batteries, are now being used in manufacturing and could support a wide range of applications 鈥 from grid-scale energy storage to vehicles and electronics.</p><p>鈥淭he discovery, design and synthesis of new materials present exciting opportunities for developing long-lasting and low-cost energy storage solutions for grid and vehicular applications,鈥 Ban said.</p><p>Kimberly See will join 麻豆免费版下载Boulder faculty in August 2026 as a Renewable and Sustainable Energy Institute fellow with an appointment in chemical and biological engineering. The See Group is looking to replace metals like cobalt and nickel with more sustainable options such as iron in lithium-ion batteries to lower cost while improving safety.</p><p>鈥淐urrent lithium-ion technology provides the energy density needed for diurnal cycling (charging when solar power is abundant and discharging at night), but high costs and safety concerns limit widespread grid deployment,鈥 See said.</p><h2><strong>Beyond batteries</strong></h2><p>Another possible solution can be found in Ankur Gupta鈥檚 lab. Gupta is researching supercapacitors 鈥 energy storage devices that charge quickly and last longer than traditional batteries.</p><div class="ucb-box ucb-box-title-hidden ucb-box-alignment-right ucb-box-style-fill ucb-box-theme-lightgray"><div class="ucb-box-inner"><div class="ucb-box-title">&nbsp;</div><div class="ucb-box-content"><h2><strong>Beyond the lab</strong></h2><p>Solid Power, a 麻豆免费版下载Engineering spinout founded by mechanical engineers, went public in 2021. It is now an industry-leading developer of next-generation all-solid-state battery technology, with major partnership deals with BMW and Ford and a manufacturing facility in Thornton, Colorado. It also boasts many 麻豆免费版下载Engineering alumni among its employees.</p></div></div></div><p>While supercapacitors are not known for storing energy for long periods, they could help manage grid fluctuations. Velasquez believes AI could eventually help close gender and socioeconomic gaps by functioning as a personalized tutor.</p><p>To that end, ATLAS Institute Assistant Professor Ryo Suzuki is developing tools such as Augmented Physics, which uses AI alongside augmented and virtual reality to turn static textbook diagrams into interactive simulations.</p><p>鈥淣ow, imagine if AI could not only respond in text but also generate animated explanations in real time, going beyond text to make learning engaging, visual and playful,鈥 Suzuki said.</p><p>Thomas Breideband, associate director of the NSF National AI Institute for Student- AI Teaming, works with an interdisciplinary community of researchers to study how AI can support collaboration in learning environments 鈥 particularly in middle and high school, where STEM participation gaps often emerge.</p><p>鈥淐ollaboration is a critical 21st-century skill, but it is very rarely explicitly practiced,鈥 Breideband said. He and his colleagues are currently working with schools to integrate AI-enhanced curriculum units in classrooms.</p><h2>AI in the lab</h2><p>Researchers also interrogate AI. In Associate Professor Daniel Acu帽a鈥檚 lab, his team uses AI techniques to study how large language models absorb 鈥減restige bias鈥 from language used to describe scientific research.</p><p>鈥淚nstead of saying, 鈥榮cientists found X,鈥 journalists say, 鈥楬arvard scientists found X,鈥欌 Acu帽a said. Because LLMs learn from that same data, Acu帽a hopes his work can help highlight 鈥 and eventually correct 鈥 those patterns.</p><p>Velasquez is tackling another challenge: AI鈥檚 immense computational cost. His research on neurosymbolic AI seeks to end 鈥済atekeeping鈥 and "monopolization" in AI.</p><p>鈥淲hen it comes to natural language generation, it comes at a tremendous cost,鈥 Velasquez said. 鈥淭he neurosymbolic AI community has seen cases where we can use 100,000 to a million times less data.鈥</p><h2>New AI degree program</h2><p>The newly launched Professional Master鈥檚 in Artificial Intelligence merges technical skills with ethical considerations.</p><p>鈥淚f one of our graduates is hired by a company like Walmart, they should be able to analyze consumer data to decide what products to buy and how to manage inventory,鈥 Sankaranarayanan said. 鈥淏ut they should also be able to say, 鈥楾his approach preserves privacy, complies with regulations and is ethically sound.鈥欌</p><p>The online degree option through Coursera is up and running, while the on-campus version begins in fall 2026.</p><p>Educators agree that they must be intentional in their approach to teaching AI.</p><p>鈥淭echnology has a very mixed record,鈥 said Sankaranarayanan. 鈥淧eople fear losing jobs, and that is a valid fear, but it doesn鈥檛 have to go that way. Mei-Dan grabbed a napkin and just started sketching an idea for a new project,鈥 said Segil, a research professor in the Paul M. In fact, Mei-Dan said the next-generation cannula has been a catalyst for hundreds of successful hip arthroscopy surgeries nationwide since its launch in August 2025.</p><p>But like many engineering projects, achieving real-world impact doesn鈥檛 just happen overnight.</p><p>鈥淚t began as a self-funded project on campus, where we were building prototypes and trying to envision how it could be used in surgery,鈥 Segil said, pulling out a clear bag filled with different iterations of the CAP-LIFT cannula. 鈥淓ach one of us would bring different perspectives to the table so that together we could make the best product possible.鈥</p><p>When the two finally came up with the right design, they submitted the technology and won 麻豆免费版下载Boulder鈥檚 Lab Venture Challenge (LVC) in 2020. The experience inspired Li to devote his life to flood research. 鈥淔loods don鈥檛 necessarily happen where the rain falls,鈥 Li said. 鈥淚n my community, many lives were taken by floods. It was devastating.鈥</p><h2>Improved simulations</h2><p>In the United States, the National Weather Service issues weather forecasts and warnings based on expected rainfall and whether the precipitation is likely to overflow nearby rivers, streams or dams.</p><p>At Li鈥檚 Flood Lab at 麻豆免费版下载Boulder, his simulations draw on NWS rainfall predictions and detailed terrain data, including ground permeability, land use, soil type and vegetation cover. By combining U.S. Geological Survey terrain maps with AI, his models predict flooding with far greater precision and speed than the Federal Emergency Management Agency鈥檚 traditional physics-based models.</p><p>His approach can pinpoint where floodwater will pool at a one-meter resolution, detailed enough to show whether an individual building is likely to flood, compared with FEMA鈥檚 10-meter resolution.</p><p>Li said achieving one-meter resolution using FEMA鈥檚 traditional approach would require extensive expertise and about a year of computation. Using AI, he can simulate an entire county in just two to three hours at a far lower cost.</p><p>鈥淒rilling it down to single households is only possible once you have an AI product like this,鈥 Li said. 鈥淚t was unimaginable in the past.鈥</p><p>To improve model accuracy, Li checks his results with local experts who know which areas are most vulnerable to flooding. This human insight serves as a guardrail for AI, which can sometimes 鈥渉allucinate鈥 false warnings.</p><h2>Personalized warnings</h2><p>Li鈥檚 research also involves changing how flood risk is communicated. Instead of the traditional top-down approach, issuing a single warning message for an entire county, he envisions a customized alert that starts with individual households and scales up to neighborhoods, communities and counties.</p><div class="feature-layout-callout feature-layout-callout-medium"><div class="ucb-callout-content"><p class="text-align-center lead"><strong>鈥淔loods don鈥檛 necessarily happen where the rain falls.鈥</strong></p></div></div><p>鈥淭here is evidence that during floods, some of the people with language barriers were unable to evacuate in time and lost their lives,鈥 Li said. 鈥淧ersonalized warnings can help ensure critical information is clearly communicated so people can act quickly.鈥</p><p>His goal is to use data from the American Community Survey, an annual U.S. Census Bureau report on household demographics, to generate personalized warnings in each resident鈥檚 preferred language about whether their home will likely be affected. Evacuation guidance would also reflect a person鈥檚 mobility needs and access to transportation.</p><h2>Flood prediction for all</h2><p>Li is also developing an AI-powered assistant to democratize access to flood modeling. The approach aims to remove technical barriers that limit flood modeling to experts. Anyone would be able to see an area鈥檚 overall flood risk based on historical events. If so, comparing how time flows between two elevations can unlock how we better understand our planet.</p><div class="feature-layout-callout feature-layout-callout-medium"><div class="ucb-callout-content"><p class="text-align-center lead"><strong>鈥淭his is about understanding the earth.鈥</strong></p></div></div><p>Albert Einstein鈥檚 theory of general relativity tells us that time will pass more slowly under the influence of gravity, known as the gravitational redshift.</p><p>The Mt. Precise gravity measurements could allow scientists to detect water flow for improved flood monitoring.</li><li><strong>Sensing Earth鈥檚 surface: </strong>Earthquakes redistribute land mass, creating tiny shifts in gravity. Atomic clocks may detect changes, offering new insight into tectonic activity.</li><li><strong>Watching magma rise: </strong>As magma accumulates beneath a volcano, the increased mass changes local gravity. Clock-based sensing could provide a clear picture of subsurface dynamics.</li></ul></div></div></div><p>What makes this endeavor remarkable is that we鈥檙e seeing how atoms inside an optical clock can reveal the gravitational pull on Earth 鈥 bridging the micro and the macro worlds.</p><p>鈥淭here鈥檚 not a lot of precedent for making measurements at this level,鈥 said Ludlow, who developed the portable optical clock. 鈥淭hen we鈥檙e adding into the mix that one of the clocks has to be up on a mountain top exposed to some harsh conditions.鈥</p><p>These optical clocks can measure changes in the Earth鈥檚 gravity down to just one centimeter in elevation, important in telling us where water flows, how land shifts and how the Earth responds to natural forces. Right now, that one-centimeter precision corresponds to measuring time at the 18th decimal point.</p><p>Although the team鈥檚 first trip to the Fourteener mainly tested whether the technology could survive the harsh mountain conditions 鈥 and it did 鈥 the researchers also successfully linked the Mt. Blue Sky clock to its twin in Boulder.</p><p>Next year, they will continue capturing detailed time comparisons at these extreme elevations, hoping to operate at the same precision as in the lab.</p><p>鈥淭his is about understanding the Earth,鈥 Diddams said. 鈥淚f we鈥檙e able to tell where water flows or what鈥檚 going on under the surface when we can鈥檛 directly see it, that鈥檚 something quite exciting.
