Machine Learning, Information Theory, Network, Communication, and Data Sciences (LINCD)

We live in an information age where various manipulations of data, such as compression, quality enhancement, encryption, storage, and communication, on the one hand, and artifical intelligence/machine learning (AI/ML), that involves the extraction of information from data for classification, prediction, knowledge discovery and understanding etc., on the other, are increasingly playing a central role. For instance, if you ask your phone a question, the voice data is compressed and wirelessly communicated through a network to the cloud, where it is decoded and its meaning is inferred, and the relevant answer(s) are found using AI/ML.Â
Our group’s research helps lay the foundation for the above. Our curriculum prepares students for a career in artificial intelligence/machine learning, modern communications, and signal processing. People have found that, in order to apply AI in a domain effectively, it is more productive for individuals with domain knowledge to learn AI. Furthermore, we offer five AI/ML related courses in the spirit of not only teaching you how to drive a car (AI/ML model), but also how the car works. This enables you to utilize the car better and design new ones, which is crucial in a rapidly evolving field where new AI/ML models are constantly emerging.
Our past students have gone on to academic careers as professors and joined diverse companies at the vanguard in communications and data science research and development, such as Qualcomm, Samsung, Google, Broadcom, BMW, and Merrill Lynch.
