The film featured graphic footage and raised critical questions about dolphin hunting practices.&nbsp;</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span>Knight was transfixed.&nbsp;</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span>鈥淚t was a pretty tough subject, but through that film, I became more aware of things going on in the world,鈥 Knight said. 鈥淭he whole community of people trying to do good in the world and trying to make the world a better place 鈥 that really inspired me and continues to.鈥&nbsp;</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span>Knight took that inspiration and found his own way to improve the world. As founder and CEO of Boulder-based&nbsp;</span><a href="https://www.rootedrobotics.com/" rel="nofollow"><span>Rooted Robotics</span></a><span>, Knight鈥檚 mission is to provide affordable automation systems to indoor farms of all sizes.&nbsp;</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span>The company, founded in 2019, offers game-changing technology to small and mid-size controlled-environment growers who can鈥檛 afford industrial-sized 鈥 and industrial-priced 鈥 services.&nbsp;</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span>鈥淚f we look to 50 or 100 years from now, if climate change does get significantly worse, as is largely expected, we need to be able to feed ourselves,鈥 Knight said. 鈥淲e need to be able to do that at scale without having millions or billions of people starve because we can鈥檛 grow as much food in the same ways that we used to.鈥</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span>Enter controlled-environment agriculture, a term Knight explained refers to incorporating a more technology-focused approach to farming. In these environments, which often exist as vertical farms or greenhouses, growers can control everything from temperature and sunlight to humidity and nutrients, along with countless factors in between.&nbsp;</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span>This flexibility allows growers to customize what they grow and when they grow it in a way traditional farmers cannot.&nbsp;</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span>Rooted Robotics offers products that help farmers with seeding, harvesting and cleaning. Each system is designed with simplicity, reliability and sustainability in mind. Everything the company sells is also made to be upgradable with customized add-ons, allowing the machines to grow with the farms they support.&nbsp;</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span>Knight鈥檚 own expertise in the field dates back to his time in 麻豆免费版下载Boulder鈥檚 College of Engineering &amp; Applied Science, where he learned many of the technical skills he routinely applies to his work. He and&nbsp;<strong>Sebastian Vazquez-Carson</strong> (Phys鈥17) were friends as undergraduates, and the two reconnected in 2022 when Vazquez joined the company to help with a robotic system.&nbsp;</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span>When Knight considered undergraduate programs, he was drawn to the community he found at CU. Today, with his company still housed in Boulder, he has kept close ties to the school.&nbsp;<strong>Christian Maljian</strong> (Engr鈥19) is co-founder and head of mechanical engineering. Of Rooted Robotics鈥 seven part-time employees, six are students from the College of Engineering &amp; Applied Science or the Leeds School of Business.&nbsp;</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span>Rooted Robotics also hosts summer interns from 麻豆免费版下载Boulder. In addition, the company partnered with the Paul M. Rady Department of Mechanical Engineering this year to sponsor a capstone project. The senior students involved with the project are helping Rooted Robotics develop a variation of the company鈥檚 seeding machine.&nbsp;</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span>Knight鈥檚 hope is that, through the partnership and the innovation he鈥檚 brought to the company since its founding, Rooted Robotics can continue to be an inspiration and valuable resource for indoor growers.&nbsp;</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span>鈥淎 beautiful vision that could exist in 50 to 100 years would be that we鈥檙e growing most of our agriculture in these controlled environments,鈥 Knight said. 鈥淏ecause of that, nature will be able to reclaim a lot of the farmland that blankets the Earth. That can also help with reversing climate change at scale. Current vaccines need to be kept refrigerated or frozen because the proteins in them start to degrade at warmer temperatures. When the proteins go bad, the shots become ineffective. For this reason, it鈥檚 been challenging to administer traditional rabies vaccines in regions that lack electricity or specialized cold storage equipment.&nbsp;</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span>But 麻豆免费版下载Boulder researchers are looking to change that, thanks to recent innovations from the university鈥檚 chemical and biological engineering department, where scientists have&nbsp;</span><a href="https://jpharmsci.org/article/S0022-3549%2825%2900388-0/abstract" rel="nofollow"><span>discovered a new way</span></a><span> to keep these shots viable at warmer temperatures and combine multiple timed-release doses into a single injection.&nbsp;</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span>These new, temperature-stable shots don鈥檛 degrade in warmer environments and can be stored in bulk powder form until they鈥檙e ready to be used.&nbsp;</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span>To make the vaccines, the research team sprays the vaccine proteins with a sugar solution that hardens to a candy-like texture. The candied particles then get a nanoscopic coating of aluminum oxide (the same chemical that makes up sapphire jewels) that protects the sugar-coated vaccine particles for days to weeks before dissolving in the patient鈥檚 body.&nbsp;</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span>鈥淲e鈥檙e basically making sapphire-coated Jolly Ranchers that deliver vaccines,鈥 said&nbsp;</span><a href="/chbe/theodore-w-randolph" rel="nofollow"><span><strong>Ted Randolph</strong></span></a><span> (ChemEngr鈥83), 麻豆免费版下载Boulder professor and lead study author.&nbsp;</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span>Rabies shots typically require three to five doses to be effective, so combining the doses into one shot is more efficient and cuts down on unnecessary health care visits.&nbsp;</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span>Randolph believes the same process could also be used to create vaccines for other viruses, such as human papillomavirus (HPV) and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).&nbsp;</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span>To bring this technology to market, Randolph and&nbsp;</span><a href="/mcdb/robert-garcea" rel="nofollow"><span>Robert Garcea</span></a><span>, professor emeritus in 麻豆免费版下载Boulder鈥檚 molecular, cellular and developmental biology department, formed the startup&nbsp;</span><a href="/venturepartners/startup-portfolio/vitrivax-inc" rel="nofollow"><span>VitriVax</span></a><span>. The foreman explained that they once belonged to a campus engineering building before the university eventually replaced them with clay. The foreman offered him the pair as a campus storage facility contained more of them.&nbsp;</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span>鈥淚 did take them,鈥 said Scheel, who lives in Centennial, Colorado. 鈥淚 was cu - curious when these were used. I assumed before 1921.鈥&nbsp;</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span>Scheel donated the tiles to the 麻豆免费版下载Heritage Center in July. Mona Lambrecht, Heritage Center interim director and curator, researched the tiles and discovered they had been used to create a 4-foot-long by 60-foot-wide skylight for the Engineering Shops building, which opened in 1908 and was later known as Hunter Sciences until it was demolished in 2002. He invites us to consider haunting questions such as why a battered wife doesn鈥檛 simply leave while her husband is out, illustrating how the threat of severe harm to one鈥檚 welfare can override considerations of morality and compel individuals to remain in oppres-sive circumstances.&nbsp;</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span>Consider a battered wife who faces an oppressive double bind: resisting her abuser risks her safety, while compliance perpetuates the very system that oppresses her. This leads to an untenable situation where she is damned if she revolts, and damned if she doesn鈥檛. In Idowu鈥檚 view, this dilemma complicates blaming oppressed individuals for not revolting.&nbsp;</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span>Another facet of Idowu鈥檚 scholarship introduces the term 鈥渆pistemic disgust鈥 鈥 a neglected psychological response that prompts us to reject certain beliefs and utterances because they repulse us. The technology has advanced to the point where Jun鈥檚 clocks would gain or lose less than a second in the whole age of the universe. These highly accurate clocks are tied into technology improvements to support better navigation, communication and the ability to sense unseen things (for example, small changes in gravity associated with objects buried underground). His group is now examining the air exhaled by people with various diseases to find tiny traces of certain chemicals associated with a particular disease. I was an instructor pilot in the space shuttle training aircraft. We were both interested in becoming astronauts. Srubar said this success required looking back 鈥 way back 鈥 to life on Earth before humans. Global cement manufacturing produces 11 million tons of CO2 every day (roughly equivalent to emissions from all the cars in the world), or about 8% of the world鈥檚 total CO2 emissions, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. And, according to the U.S. Department of Energy, demand for cement in the U.S. alone is expected to double by 2050.</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span>As the company realizes its transformative role in the construction industry, it has raised $8 million in private funding in the past year and was awarded a role in a $10 million grant from the&nbsp;</span><a href="https://www.energy.gov/" rel="nofollow"><span>Department of Energy</span></a><span> (DOE) that will fund collaboration between a trio of national labs. Their challenge was to double the energy density of a rechargeable battery.</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span>鈥淭he metrics they wanted to reach were unheard of,鈥 said Stoldt, but he and Lee accepted the challenge anyway. 鈥淲e saw it as an opportunity鈥 and we sat down and determined that, at least on paper, the only rechargeable battery technology that could meet the specs for the program was a solid-state battery.鈥</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span>Lee and Stoldt partnered with Douglas Campbell, a small business and early-stage product developer, and chief technology officer Joshua Buettner-Garrett to start&nbsp;Solid Power. Along with then-mentor Dave Jansen, the team negotiated a commercialization agreement with&nbsp;</span><a href="/venturepartners/home" rel="nofollow"><span>Venture Partners</span></a><span> (known then as the 麻豆免费版下载Technology Transfer Office), making the company an exclusive licensee to the university鈥檚 intellectual property.</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span>What began as an idea Stoldt said was 鈥渂ootstrapped鈥 in 麻豆免费版下载Boulder labs, Solid Power is now an industry-leading developer of next-generation all-solid-state battery technology. As their name suggests, solid-state batteries (SSBs) differ from conventional batteries in that the electrolyte powering them is a solid material instead of a gel or liquid. That gives SSBs many advantages over lithium-ion batteries now widely used in electronics, toys, appliances and 鈥 critically 鈥 electric vehicles.</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span>Solid Power鈥檚 design bests lithium-ion cells on safety, cost, durability and battery life 鈥 attributes long sought by consumers and automakers. Their technology swaps the flammable liquid in lithium-ion cells with a solid, sulfide-based electrolyte that is safer and more stable across a broad temperature range. Solid Power鈥檚 cells also easily outpace the conductivity and energy density of today鈥檚 best rechargeable batteries. The result is a smaller, lighter cell that is cheaper and has a longer-lasting charge.</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span>Solid Power, which went public in 2021, employs many Forever Buffs and boasts major partnership deals with BMW and Ford, along with a new 75,000-square-foot manufacturing facility in Thornton.</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span>Their continued innovation was recognized with a recent $5.6 million DOE grant to continue developing its nickel- and cobalt-free cell, and, late last year, the company began award negotiations for up to $50 million in DOE funding. Some universities are struggling with enrollment, and people are questioning the value of a four-year degree. But our record here is stronger than it鈥檚 ever been. For the second year in a row, we welcomed the largest classes of both undergraduate and PhD students ever.</span></p><h4><span>You鈥檝e put a major emphasis on recruiting more female engineers. Why is this important for the college?</span></h4><p dir="ltr"><span>Historically, the engineering profession has been male-dominated, and that puts us at risk of creating solutions to problems that don鈥檛 represent our broader society. Inclusion is a pillar of everything we do and integral to our impact. We need a more diverse workforce to solve the complex technological and infrastructure challenges of today鈥檚 world.</span></p><h4><span>Where do gender parity efforts start at CU?</span></h4><p dir="ltr"><span>It starts early. The current vision builds on long-standing efforts by 麻豆免费版下载Boulder and national groups to expand access in science and math for girls in K-12. By showing up in early education, we鈥檙e giving students confidence that they can make an impact on society by being an engineer. And it鈥檚 paying off. Last year, 41 percent of our first-year engineering undergraduates were women,&nbsp;</span><a href="/engineering/2024/04/08/cu-boulder-leads-charge-toward-gender-parity-engineering" rel="nofollow"><span>putting us #1in the nation in terms of gender parity</span></a><span> among 167 public colleges of engineering, according to the American Society for Engineering Education.</span></p><h4><span>You鈥檝e been focused on fusing engineering with business. What impact has that had?</span></h4><p dir="ltr"><span>We鈥檙e beyond the traditional metrics of publishing papers as a primary metric for success. Patents are important. Economic impact is important. We need to focus on the implications and implementations of our work, not just the work itself. It鈥檚 inspiring the next generation of graduates and PhD students to be entrepreneurs. 麻豆免费版下载launched 35 companies last fiscal year through the&nbsp;</span><a href="/venturepartners/home" rel="nofollow"><span>Venture Partners program</span></a><span>, placing us second among&nbsp;all universities over the last decade.</span></p><h4><span>You recently created a new position within the college: Assistant Dean of Innovation and Entrepreneurship.</span></h4><p dir="ltr"><span>And we quickly selected Wil Srubar for the position. He鈥檚 a crucial addition to our college. He has both fundamental engineering and applied business experience 鈥 he鈥檚 started three companies already. The new position is helping us with translational work, moving things out of the lab and into companies through patents or startups.</span></p><h4><span>The college is dramatically scaling up its economic impact for Colorado, with a particular focus on translating research into business success.</span></h4><p dir="ltr"><span>In a time of disruption, we need leaders. 麻豆免费版下载Boulder is a flagship of Colorado鈥檚 success&nbsp;鈥 and the college of engineering is an economic driver in all that. There鈥檚 something special going on in Boulder. There have always been pockets of innovation and entrepreneurship in the college, but we鈥檙e evolving to focus more across the board on economic impact. We have a responsibility to help the state grow in a sustainable and equitable manner.</span></p><h4><span>In 2021,&nbsp;</span><a href="/business/about/business-engineering-expansion" rel="nofollow"><span>麻豆免费版下载built the Rustandy Building</span></a><span>, connecting the Engineering Center and the Koelbel Building, home to the Leeds School of Business. What was the thinking behind this fusion?</span></h4><p dir="ltr"><span>Our partnership [with Leeds] is paramount, and the connection between business and engineering on campus is both an idea and a physical reality. We鈥檙e scaling up. The donor-supported project physically joined the buildings, adding 45,000 square feet of new classroom and collaboration spaces. It is a joy to see the energy in this shared space and make me hopeful for Colorado鈥檚 future leadership in high-tech industries.</span></p><h4><span>How do you measure success for the college?</span></h4><p dir="ltr"><span>We compete with universities across the nation and continue to come out at the top. But while it has been great to climb in the rankings, we don鈥檛 chase that. People are seeing what we鈥檙e doing here. We鈥檙e leaders in AI, aerospace and sustainability, among other areas. We contribute to national defense and national security. Our faculty are highly sought after for leadership positions across the U.S. and participate in national conversations that shape the future of technology. Those are the indicators I look at.</span></p><h4><span>How does engineering fit in with the rest of the campus?</span></h4><p dir="ltr"><span>Our rankings and national reputation come because we鈥檙e part of a comprehensive university 鈥 it鈥檚 one of our key advantages. We鈥檙e educating holistic engineers. They need to understand historic, political and business aspects of their work. To serve society well as engineers, we must have deep partnerships with the other colleges, schools and institutes across campus.
