Alferd Packer

Paul Danish's summer issue column about how the UMC grill came to be named after Colorado cannibal Alferd Packer (above) elicited a proposal and a question. Danish responds.ÌýÌý

Packer GrillÌý

Have Paul Danish’sÌý(Hist’65) column in theÌýSummer 2016 issueÌý[“Boulder Beat: HowÌýthe Grill Got Its Nameâ€]Ìýblown up and framed andÌýhung at the entrance ofÌýthe Grill to help futureÌýstudents not mistake aÌýÂ鶹Ãâ·Ñ°æÏÂÔØpresident for a ColoradoÌýcannibal.Ìý

I enjoyed the columnÌýabout Alferd Packer andÌýthe Alferd Packer Grill. IÌýhave always thought thatÌýit was a good name. IÌýwas a graduate studentÌýat Â鶹Ãâ·Ñ°æÏÂÔØfrom 1961 to 1965,Ìýand as I remember it theÌýgrill was already calledÌýthe Alferd Packer Grill.ÌýSince Paul Danish, theÌýauthor, is from the class
of ‘65, we must haveÌýbeen here at the sameÌýtime. Was the name unofficialÌýin the early ’60s?Ìý

Columnist Paul DanishÌýresponds: I don’t rememberÌýthe grill being calledÌýthe Packer Grill informallyÌýbefore ’68, but it is certainlyÌýpossible someoneÌýwas doing it. When theÌýUMC opened in 1954,Ìýit was referred to as theÌýIndian Grill. When theÌýspace was expanded andÌýremodeled in 1964, theÌýname was changed to theÌýRoaring Fork. It kept thatÌýname until it was formallyÌýre-branded after PackerÌýin 1968.Ìý

Music at FolsomÌý

As one of the head equipment managers for Â鶹Ãâ·Ñ°æÏÂÔØfootball, I had the assignment of being inside the team house during the 1977 [Fleetwood Mac] concert. Somehow I interacted with the stage hands.ÌýThey needed or wantedÌýsomething and I was ableÌýto solve their problem. TheyÌýinvited me to ‘come out’ andÌýeat lunch with them. WeÌýwent to the west side of theÌýbuilding after I locked upÌýand sat at tables with someÌýother people. EveryoneÌýtalked and laughed andÌýhad a good time. Behind usÌýout in the stadium the nextÌýact was performing. WhenÌýlunch was over and we allÌýstood up to return to our duties,Ìýonly then did I realize IÌýwas lunching with the stageÌýguys and the members ofÌýFleetwood Mac!Ìý

I must confess, I lovedÌýyour article [“ReturnÌýof the Dead,â€ SummerÌý2016]. You all rock!Ìý

The year that The WhoÌýplayed [1982], I snuckÌýback stage to captureÌýboth Pete Townshend’sÌýand John Entwistle’sÌýsignatures! I made aÌýfake badge, got throughÌýsecurity and hung out forÌýmost of the show back inÌýthe concrete locker roomÌýarea with the band supportÌý(trying to look like I wasÌýsupposed to be there).Ìý

When The Who cameÌýbackstage for a break, IÌýhad to reveal my unauthorizedÌýpresence to askÌýfor autographs, got twoÌýin the food area and wasÌýkicked out before gettingÌýRoger Daltrey’s. The restÌýof the show was great fromÌýoutside the stadium.Ìý

Luckiest GuyÌý

I just went through yourÌýsummer issue and wantedÌýto mail you to say how muchÌýI love your magazines.Ìý

I graduated Â鶹Ãâ·Ñ°æÏÂÔØin 1976Ìýas a grad student in architecture.ÌýI had just gottenÌýmarried in New Hampshire,Ìýand my wife Kathy and IÌýleft for what she called ourÌýthree-year honeymoon inÌýColorado. They truly wereÌýthe best years of our lives.Ìý

My undergraduateÌýschool was Boston College.ÌýI always tell people thatÌýI am the luckiest guy inÌýthe world to have gone toÌýtwo of the most beautifulÌýcolleges on the planet. WeÌýtailgate at the BC footballÌýgames, and there’s thisÌýrecent Â鶹Ãâ·Ñ°æÏÂÔØgrad who showsÌýup every once in a whileÌýand we debate about whichÌýcampus is prettier and heÌýalways tells me that BCÌýdoesn’t have the mountains.ÌýWe do have ChestnutÌýHill, I say. I guess he wins.Ìý

Anyway, they are bothÌýgorgeous. Go Buffs.Ìý

Communicators of YoreÌý

Congratulations to Dr. LoriÌýBergen on her role as foundingÌýdean of the new CollegeÌýof Media, CommunicationÌýand Information and to EricÌýGershon for his outstandingÌýinterview [“Inquiry,â€ SummerÌý2016]. I was privilegedÌýto earn an M.A. in communicationÌýwhen Dr. Thorrel FestÌýwas chair of the department.ÌýHe was a pioneer in communicationÌýcourses at NORADÌýand a personal friend of ViceÌýPresident Hubert Humphrey.ÌýOther outstandingÌýprofessors at that time were:ÌýDrs. Martin Cobin, WayneÌýBrockreide, Don Darnell andÌýMargaret Robb.Ìý

I enjoyed doing aÌýsabbatical in the late ’60sÌýand again in 1981. At thatÌýtime Dr. George MatterÌýwas chairperson and weÌýwere both from Salem HighÌýSchool in Salem, Ore. HeÌýwas an outstanding debater,Ìýand we both (now in ourÌýearly ’80s) played on theÌýhigh school football team.Ìý
