The job market is a special听challenge right now鈥攂ut听advertising students at CMDI听said they have an edge.

鈥淢any of my professors still work in the industry,鈥 said Michael Robinson (StComm鈥26). 鈥淎nd they鈥檙e willing to help find connections for you in their networks in Denver and Boulder鈥攁nd beyond.鈥澨

Robinson, who completed an internship with Ad Council over the summer, was among more than a dozen students who spent a Saturday at the Boulder offices of creative services agency 11 Dollar Bill, where they had the chance to be mentored by industry pros who鈥檝e听done work for Nike, Verizon, Pepsi, LinkedIn and more.

Jolene Fisher, associate chair of the advertising, public relations and media department, as well as an associate professor, said it鈥檚 just one way students are encouraged to connect with professionals.听

鈥淵ou鈥檙e not building a network so someone will give you a job,鈥 she said. 鈥淵ou鈥檙e building a network because through that network, you learn what听you can do and what you want to do.鈥

One mentor said he most appreciates CMDI students鈥 curiosity and courage.

鈥淥ne of the most important things you can do as a young professional is to say 鈥業 don鈥檛 know,鈥欌 said Christopher Chapman, co-founder of Denver-based Imaginology. 鈥淒o they come to a conversation prepared? Do they ask questions? I love to see that enthusiasm.鈥澨

A meeting with Chapman helped听Ansley Edelbrock, a senior majoring in strategic communication, give her resume a refresh.听

鈥淚t鈥檚 so meaningful to meet with people who remember what it鈥檚 like being a student, looking for connections who can help you,鈥 she said. 鈥淚t gives me confidence and demonstrates how CMDI is supporting me as I build that network of professionals.鈥

Those connections have never been more important, said John Polk, 11 Dollar Bill founder and CEO; twice each听year, he invites CMDI students to his agency, which works with Netflix,听CVS, Manchester United and other global brands.

鈥淭he industry is dramatically changing, especially due to A.I.,鈥 Polk said. 鈥淲hat I鈥檓 looking to do through this event is find mentors at companies where these students could potentially apply, to give them a leg up.鈥

Mona Hasan, creative director of Boulder-based Fortnight Collective,听said the students she met 鈥渉ad a swagger about them, and personality in their work.鈥澨

鈥淭he Boulder creative community is a unique place鈥攑artly because of the professionals here, but also because of 麻豆免费版下载students, who help nurture that creativity,鈥 she said.

The students鈥 creativity also impressed Mickey Citarella, partner and head of account services at Sterling-Rice Group.听

鈥淥ftentimes, I see their work and wish we had made something like that,鈥 said Citarella (Bus, Span鈥11). 鈥淚t鈥檚 provocative, fun, exciting鈥攊t鈥檚 creativity in the best way possible.鈥澨
