Anna Wynfield
Dissertation Fellow 鈥 Anthropology
Anna鈥檚 dissertation, 鈥淐onceiving Labor: An Ethnography of Midwifery Practice and Prenatal Care after COVID-19,鈥 is based on multi-year ethnographic research with certified nurse-midwives and pregnant people in the U.S. Her work aims to explore the individual practices people engage in to bridge systemic inequities and adapt care within expanding fissures of the healthcare system. In her dissertation, she draws on theoretical perspectives from feminist anthropology and political economy to argue that sustaining personalized care requires gendered and stratified forms of labor that unfold within and beyond clinical spaces. In doing so, she centers the experiences of the (female) providers and pregnant people most responsible for reconciling the inequities they experience most acutely. Her research ultimately highlights how historically driven practices are (re)configured in the aftermath of the pandemic, tracing the ways that care emerges within late-stage capitalist and post-Roe landscapes of reproductive responsibility.

"As most (if not all) of my fellow graduate students will tell you, imposter syndrome is something that hits us hard in our frst year; confdence in my research, writing, and studies is something I have regrettably lacked. This fellowship really has made me feel that someone believes in me and that I belong at this university." Incoming CHA Fellow
