Having benefited from AOS through collaborations, mentorship networks and opportunities to engage with cutting-edge research, I am motivated to give back in a leadership role.ā€&nbsp;</p><p>His involvement with AOS has included serving on committees, organizing symposia and building inclusive community spaces at annual meetings</p><p>ā€œI am particularly interested in helping the Society continue to foster a vibrant, inclusive and forward-looking ornithological community while supporting early-career scientists, strengthening connections across disciplines and engaging in effective outreach,ā€ he noted in his candidate statement.</p><p>Taylor, who grew up in rural southern Ontario, earned his undergraduate degree in wildlife biology at the University of Guelph and his PhD at Queen’s University. He completed a postdoctoral fellowship in the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and worked as a field biologist in South America.</p><p>As principal investigator of the <a href="/lab/taylor/" rel="nofollow">Taylor Lab</a>, he leads research focused on hybridization, speciation, evolutionary ecology and population genomics, primarily of birds. He and his colleagues pursue research using&nbsp;natural hybrid zones and recent radiations to understand the genetic bases of traits involved in reproductive isolation, population divergence and&nbsp;speciation, and&nbsp;the impacts of anthropogenic change, including climate change, on species distributions, interactions and evolution.&nbsp;</p><p>Taylor also is host of the podcast ā€œ<a href="https://www.okaybutbirds.com/" rel="nofollow">Okay, But… Birds</a>,ā€ which has addressed topics ranging from whether birds invented music to how wildfire smoke affects birds and a rumination on whether <a href="https://www.okaybutbirds.com/episodes/e9" rel="nofollow">birdwatching is the original PokĆ©mon</a> with Pulitzer Prize-winning science writer Ed Yong.</p><p>ā€œBeing elected to AOS Council is an honor,ā€ Taylor said. ā€œI have long worked to help the AOS become a more inclusive society and am impressed by the dedication of the society to their members. Sloan Foundation Matter-to-Life</a> program.</p><p>The two-year, $594,487 grant will support Betterton’s ongoing research on microtubules, the small, long tubes inside cells that serve several functions and that Betterton’s research suggests may be less fixed and static than previously thought.</p><p>The Sloan Matter-to-Life program aims ā€œto sharpen our scientific understanding of the physical principles and mechanisms that distinguish living systems from inanimate matter, and to explore the conditions under which physical principles and mechanisms guide the complexification of matter towards life.ā€</p><div class="feature-layout-callout feature-layout-callout-medium"><div class="ucb-callout-content"> <div class="imageMediaStyle large_image_style"> <img loading="lazy" src="/asmagazine/sites/default/files/styles/large_image_style/public/2026-08/Meredith%20Betterton.jpg?itok=ejo_x9dP" width="1500" height="2250" alt="portrait of Meredith Betterton"> </div> <span class="media-image-caption"> <p class="small-text">Āé¶¹Ćā·Ń°ęĻĀŌŲBoulder scientist Meredith Betterton has been awarded a <span>two-year, $594,487 grant from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation Matter-to-Life program.&nbsp;</span></p> </span> </div></div><p>Betterton and her research colleagues study microtubules in cells, which help maintain cell structure similar to how beams support a building and also act like highways that move traffic along, she explains.&nbsp;</p><p>ā€œBecause (microtubules) have this important role as highways that things stick to and then move along, people have thought about them as being kind of fixed,ā€ she says. ā€œYou build a microtubule, it’s there to be a highway and then it’s pretty static.</p><p>ā€œThe thought has been that once they’re there (in the cell), they sit there. Our project has to do with the idea that there might be subtle changes within the (microtubule) structure that act as a signal that sends information—so they act in some ways not as a highway, but like a telephone wire that’s sending signals.ā€</p><p><strong>Building with bricks</strong></p><p>Microtubules are built of subunits, called tubulin, that can be compared to bricks, Betterton explains. These tubulin ā€œbricksā€ are known to make small internal changes to their shape and size; what hasn’t been known is what happens to the rest of the tubulin in the microtubule if one changes. ā€œImagine packing a lot of bricks together in a wall,ā€ she says. ā€œIf you change the shape of one, what happens to the others nearby?ā€</p><p>Several years ago, Betterton and her research group, in collaboration with another team of research colleagues including Radhika Subramanian and Sithara S. Wijeratne at Harvard Medical School, <a href="https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/2020.12.23.424221v1" rel="nofollow">were studying ā€œtrafficā€</a> along microtubules, which is done by motor proteins. These proteins take ā€œstepsā€ along the microtubule. They also can pile up and cause traffic jams, so Betterton and her colleagues were studying those jams to better understand the motors.&nbsp;</p><p>The researchers discovered this phenomenon because the math wasn’t working. ā€œIn my group we were working on mathematical modeling of this, and we couldn’t get the model to work,ā€ she says. ā€œWe put in measurements, and the equations gave us predictions that were really different from what experiments showed. We found the only way we could get the model to make sense was if something was happening where the motors could talk to each other over really long distances.ā€</p><p>While this action happens on a nanometer scale, ā€œif you scaled it up it would be as if, when you’re driving a car, you could know there’s another car two miles away and how fast it’s driving,ā€ she says. ā€œThat really was the initial discovery—this weird, long-range effect that we didn’t know where it was coming from.ā€</p><p>Other research had explored the conformational transitions, or structural shifts in tubulin, and how motor proteins can stick to microtubules and change their state if they bind in large numbers. Betterton and her research group are exploring whether a change of state can happen when motor proteins bind in small numbers and send signals over long distances.</p><p><strong>How cells process information</strong></p><p>A key aspect of this research, Betterton says, is it explores a different paradigm for how to think about these particular molecules in cells and aims for broader understanding of the way cells process information.</p><p>For example, she says, much is known about how neurons in the brain send electrical signals—a vital process for information transmission in the brain—but that process ā€œcan only happen in that one type of cell, whereas microtubules are in every cell,ā€ Betterton says. ā€œThey could be sensing something happening in one part of the cell, so we’re studying this new way that cells could be responding.ā€</p><p>She adds that there are various potential applications for this avenue of research, including developing more targeted chemotherapy drugs: ā€œThere’s one (tubulin) that seems to be resistant to this subtle expansion and contraction. Recent work shows that makes them not as responsive to chemotherapy drugs. Because microtubules are involved in cell division, some first-line chemotherapy drugs for cancer act against microtubules.</p><p>ā€œWhat has been discovered is that some cancers can resist these chemotherapy drugs by switching to this other type of tubulin that doesn’t change shape as well,ā€ she says, adding that understanding more about tubulin expansion and contraction could possibly lead to more effective drugs.</p><p>There also could be potential applications in the physics of materials and using microtubules and motor proteins to make new types of materials that are more tunable to specific functions.</p><p><span>ā€œThe Sloan program is interested in this research because this specific program is called Matter-to-Life,ā€ Betterton says. ā€œWhat that’s trying to say of matter is that it’s some collections of molecules, but what about it becomes different between something that’s inert versus something that could be more alive? Her seminal contributions range from work on FGF signaling in limb development to the role of cell cilia during early organ development, and, more recently, efforts to understand the mechanisms underlying human neural tube defects.</span></p><p><span><strong>'Wow, this is really cool'</strong></span></p><p><span>Niswander originally became interested in research as an undergraduate at the Āé¶¹Ćā·Ń°ęĻĀŌŲ, where she first stepped into a lab through a work-study program. ā€œOnce I started to do research, I was like, ā€˜Wow, this is really cool,ā€™ā€ she recalled.</span></p><p><span>That exposure led Niswander to graduate school at Case Western Reserve University, where she joined the developmental biology program. She remembers thinking, ā€œI don’t know anything about development … I’m going to do that,ā€ before joining the lab of Terry Magnuson, PhD.</span></p><p><span>Her dissertation work used genetic deletions in mice to probe which regions of chromosome 7 are necessary for embryonic development. She spent time in Sweden learning a specialized technique that helped her complete the work.&nbsp;</span></p><p><span>ā€œThere’s no need to reinvent the wheel if somebody else knows how to do it,ā€ she said. ā€œGo learn from an expert.ā€</span></p><p><span>After completing her PhD, Niswander joined the lab of Gail Martin, PhD, at the University of California, San Francisco, as a postdoctoral fellow. She began working on limb development, a topic no one else in the lab was pursuing at the time, and trained further at University College London with Cheryll Tickle, PhD, a leading expert in the field.&nbsp;</span></p><p><span>During this work, she found expression of FGF4 in the apical ectodermal ridge (AER) is sufficient for limb outgrowth—a finding that reflected the technical curiosity and willingness to seek outside expertise that would come to define her approach to science.&nbsp;</span></p><p><span>On her first day as a principal investigator, Niswander walked into an empty lab at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City.&nbsp;</span></p><p><span>ā€œIt’s just me … I can’t believe they let me do this,ā€ she remembers thinking. This marked the beginning of her independent research career. Soon after, Niswander began a collaboration with Kathryn Anderson, PhD, launching a large-scale forward genetic screen for developmental mutants in mice.&nbsp;</span></p><p><span>One major finding to emerge from the screen was in identifying ciliary proteins that help integrate Hedgehog signaling during organogenesis, which Barna describes as, ā€œdogma changing.ā€ The findings reconceptualized cilia from passive ā€œcellular antennasā€ into active signaling hubs that drive decisions about development. ā€œThe cilia is not just a boring antenna that's sticking out of the cell but is like a major signaling center also," Barna noted.&nbsp;</span></p><div class="feature-layout-callout feature-layout-callout-large"><div class="ucb-callout-content"><blockquote><p class="lead"><i class="fa-solid fa-quote-left fa-2x ucb-icon-color-gold">&nbsp;</i><span>&nbsp;</span><em><span>I am extremely pleased to share in the honor of this award with all of my current and former trainees whose research drove our discoveries and revealed the wonders of the embryo.ā€</span></em></p></blockquote></div></div><p><span><strong>Seeking the bigger picture</strong></span></p><p><span>Niswander later returned to the&nbsp;Āé¶¹Ćā·Ń°ęĻĀŌŲ, where her work expanded from identifying genes linked to neural tube defects to probing the broader underlying mechanisms.&nbsp;"[Niswander] was looking for a way to plug in some of these basic discoveries into human health even more,ā€ said Barna.&nbsp;</span></p><p><span>Neural tube defects remain a central focus of her current work, reflecting her broader approach to science: ā€œI’d be bored to tears to study anything at one level. I want to see things in that bigger picture,ā€ she explained.&nbsp;</span></p><p><span>Niswander continues to teach limb development as a way of sharing what she finds most compelling about developmental biology and modeling the mentorship style she values.&nbsp;</span></p><p><span>ā€œI still teach limb development because I think it's such an easy system for somebody to say, ā€˜Oh yeah, why are my fingers here and my shoulder there?ā€™ā€ she said.&nbsp;</span></p><p><span>Although her research has since expanded beyond questions of limb development, her postdoctoral findings still stand out to her. Remove the AER and limb growth stalls; replace its signal with FGF and the limb continues to grow.&nbsp;</span></p><p><span>ā€œI still find it astounding,ā€ she said, ā€œthat you can take off this whole strip of tissue – the apical ridge – and just put back in FGF, and the limb will continue to grow.ā€</span></p><p><span>Across her independent career, Niswander has trained nearly 50 graduate students and postdoctoral researchers who have gone on to careers in science and beyond: professors, scientists, journalists and editors.&nbsp;</span></p><p><span>ā€œI have no preconceived notions that somebody’s going to be like me,ā€ Niswander said. ā€œI give people opportunities all the time to pursue the career path that they want."&nbsp;</span></p><p><span>For Niswander, what has made it all worthwhile comes without hesitation.&nbsp;</span></p><p><span>"The people are my legacy,ā€ she said. "None of this would be fun if you didn't have people in your lab. I live vicariously through all the wonderful people that have come through my lab."&nbsp;</span></p><p><span>Barna saw that approach firsthand.&nbsp;</span></p><p><span>ā€œShe encouraged this kind of bold and free way of doing science in the lab that I try to emulate,ā€ said Barna. ā€œBut it’s very difficult to emulate Lee."</span></p><p><span>Niswander began her work at a single lab bench as an undergraduate, but her career has since evolved into one that has moved across institutions and continents, produced work spanning human disease and developmental biology, and trained dozens of scientists. It was 2021, and there had been several shootings at or near Denver’s East High School—one in the building, one in front of it and one half a block away. Carr’s daughter was a student there at the time.</p><p>Carr had written about shootings before, attempting through poetry to understand the incomprehensible, but that wasn’t the topic she wanted to focus on this time.</p><div class="feature-layout-callout feature-layout-callout-medium"><div class="ucb-callout-content"> <div class="imageMediaStyle large_image_style"> <img loading="lazy" src="/asmagazine/sites/default/files/styles/large_image_style/public/2026-05/Julie%20Carr.jpg?itok=SG3hcGDm" width="1500" height="1624" alt="portrait of Julie Carr"> </div> <span class="media-image-caption"> <p class="small-text">Āé¶¹Ćā·Ń°ęĻĀŌŲBoulder Professor Julie Carr explores <span>themes of time, war, Jewishness, memory, techno-biology, friendship and grief in her book </span><em><span>The Garden</span></em><span>.</span></p> </span> </div></div><p>ā€œOf course it was terrifying and tragic and awful, but I was feeling, as many people are feeling right now, this kind of block against what to do,ā€ explains Carr, professor of <a href="/english/" rel="nofollow">English</a> and creative writing and chair of <a href="/wgst/" rel="nofollow">women and gender studies</a> at the Āé¶¹Ćā·Ń°ęĻĀŌŲ. ā€œWe protested, we’d written laws . . . but everything felt like a dead end.</p><p>ā€œIn that moment, I had a friend say, ā€˜You’re not just having a political problem here, you’re having a spiritual crisis.’ It’s this question of what do we do with violence? What do we do with our feelings of paralysis?ā€&nbsp;</p><p>Those questions led her down wandering paths of mystical tradition, of memories of her uncle, of dreams of fire in the dry Colorado grass, of imaginings like fragments of broken glass. And she arrived at <a href="https://www.essaypress.org/carr-2/" rel="nofollow"><em>The Garden</em></a>, her recently published book that weaves fractured narratives into reoriented themes of time, war, Jewishness, memory, techno-biology, friendship and grief.</p><blockquote><p><em>In the end, as at the beginning, I just wanted to think about the woman smoking on the planter’s edge.</em></p></blockquote><p>If she can point to a beginning, it was when she began reading the writing of 12th-century Jewish philosopher Moses Maimonides. What she found in her reading was unsettling, ā€œin this way in which the questions that we have are the questions humans have always had—questions with no answers, questions about the origins of evil, questions about what it means to be part of a community. But it was helpful to write in conversation with this central medieval thinker.ā€</p><p>On a parallel path to these questions with no answers was Carr’s longtime passion for theoretical physics, which grew during her undergraduate education studying with the philosopher and feminist physicist Karen River Barad. (Back cover of </span><em><span>The Garden</span></em><span> showing artwork by Tony Robbin)</span></p> </span> </div></div><p>She thought of her uncle, the artist <a href="https://tonyrobbin.net/art.html" rel="nofollow">Tony Robbin</a>, who was fascinated with the ideas of four-dimensional space and geometry, which is and isn’t a real thing, Carr explains. The fourth dimension is a mathematical concept that can be played out in the world of math and the world of computer-generated imagery, ā€œeven though when we look at the world there’s no fourth spatial dimension that we can see,ā€ she says.</p><p>Since the early 19th century, mathematicians and philosophers have theorized about the fourth dimension, ideas that held equal fascination for Cubists like Picasso and other European modernist artists.</p><p>ā€œThey were interested in the idea of fourth-dimensional space for the same reason I became interested in Maimonides or River Barad was interested in quantum field theory: When you accept quantum theory or 4-D, you begin to understand that empirical reality is only one version of this universe.&nbsp;</p><p>ā€œThese modernist poets and painters who were interested in the fourth dimension, it gave them a sense of the possible. If you’re looking at (Guillaume) Apollinaire coming out of World War I, writing about `the beyond of&nbsp;<span> </span>this earth’ (in the poem ā€˜War’), or at Tony (Robbin) trying to describe fourth-dimensional geometry to me over and over when I was a child, you can sense the dynamism, which is so alive in his paintings. They just evoke an endlessness of possibility.ā€</p><blockquote><p><em>Once, twice, dozens of times throughout my late-cold-war childhood, my uncle, the painter of the fourth dimension, had stood before me in the fluorescent light of his studio speaking of the universal failure to perceive things as they really were.</em></p></blockquote><p>It quickly became clear as Carr wrote into these themes that she was writing in multiple different ways—memories of bombs falling that weren’t hers but felt like they were. Holocaust histories pressed against the bombings in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, pressed against the Gaza war. Strange images, such as a finger tracing the edge of an oxygen tent, a scholar wearing a stained red sweater, her friend the arborist asking her, as they walk toward ā€œa tree blooming bedspread pink,ā€ whether she ever hears ghost stories. Not all of these images could appear in one book.</p><p>ā€œIt became the idea of writing a trilogy,ā€ Carr says, explaining how <em>The Garden</em> is the first of three, the second of which, <em>Turning</em>, will be released next year. ā€œI’m interested in different ways of writing: a narrative mode, a more philosophical mode and a more lyrical mode, and how these different approaches can circle around some of the same concerns, the same histories, the same unanswerable questions.ā€</p><blockquote><p><em>But it seemed to me then and seems to me now that the best books are the ones that are never done. Even if bound and published, even if lauded and canonized, the greatest books carry a sense of incompletion. Chances are, visions of gleaming equipment, climate-controlled rooms and the hum of precision instruments come to mind.&nbsp;</p><p>But what if that lab was really a century-old gymnasium plagued by electrical outages, noise and temperatures that swing with the seasons? Those are just some of the challenges <a href="/iphy/people/faculty/douglas-r-seals" rel="nofollow">Doug Seals</a> faced while establishing one of the most productive aging research programs in the country.&nbsp;</p><p>Seals, a distinguished professor in the Āé¶¹Ćā·Ń°ęĻĀŌŲ <a href="/iphy/" rel="nofollow">Department of Integrative Physiology</a>, recently published a memoir chronicling more than four decades in biomedical research. As an undergraduate, he majored in education and business administration hoping to coach football.&nbsp;</p><p>A research career wasn’t on his radar.&nbsp;</p><p>ā€œHowever, the program had a mandatory requirement to perform a research thesis, and I discovered that I really liked the research process,ā€ Seals says.&nbsp;</p><p>That discovery set him on the path to where he is today.&nbsp;</p><p>Seals went on to earn his PhD at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, then completed his postdoctoral training at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis and at the University of Iowa before landing his first faculty position. He would eventually join Āé¶¹Ćā·Ń°ęĻĀŌŲBoulder’s Department of Integrative Physiology (the Department of Kinesiology at the time) in 1992.&nbsp;</p><p>ā€œEach stop along the journey provides a learning opportunity, and you take the new tool and add it to your toolbox,ā€ he reflects.&nbsp;</p><p>Seals’ new memoir details the unique trajectory of his career and how little of it was the byproduct of elite circumstances.&nbsp;</p><p>ā€œI had no conventional mentoring in graduate school (I did not belong to a ā€˜laboratory’), so I learned how to work on my own, independently,ā€ he says, ā€œwhich turned out to be helpful later.ā€&nbsp;</p><p><strong>Bringing science to the gym</strong></p><p>The title of Seals’ memoir, <em>A Life of Science—In Gyms</em>, isn’t a metaphor. For 30 years, Seals and a small group of colleagues ran NIH -funded research programs out of <a href="https://calendar.colorado.edu/carlson_gymnasium" rel="nofollow">Carlson Gymnasium</a> on the Āé¶¹Ćā·Ń°ęĻĀŌŲBoulder campus before moving out in 2020. The building, constructed in the 1920s, was never designed with biomedical research in mind.&nbsp;</p><p>Yet Seals and the other faculty found a way to make it work.</p><p>His idea for the book grew out of a period of reflection during the pandemic.&nbsp;</p><p>ā€œAs I was writing a series of personal commentaries during and post-pandemic, I began to think about penning a memoir of my unusual life of science in gyms,ā€ he says.&nbsp;</p><p>He started by authoring a historical scientific article about the Carlson years, then realized the story was bigger than could be told in a journal piece.&nbsp;</p><p>ā€œI decided to expand that story to include my earlier life and more details about the challenges I have overcome, which necessitated the longer narrative format of a memoir.ā€&nbsp;</p><p>The stories he chose to include during the writing process are, by his own account, the ones readers may find most compelling, particularly how Seals and his colleagues built a top academic research department at Āé¶¹Ćā·Ń°ęĻĀŌŲBoulder.&nbsp;</p><p>ā€œFor example, I share how I obtained the funds to start the first research seminar series in the department . . . the challenges we faced performing NIH-funded research in an old gym designed for sport and how I eventually took matters into my own hands to upgrade our research facilities when the campus did not do so,ā€ he says.&nbsp;</p><div class="feature-layout-callout feature-layout-callout-large"><div class="ucb-callout-content"><p>&nbsp;</p> <div class="imageMediaStyle large_image_style"> <img loading="lazy" src="/asmagazine/sites/default/files/styles/large_image_style/public/2026-05/A%20Life%20of%20Science%20in%20Gyms.jpg?itok=OGsJSAqr" width="1500" height="2261" alt="book cover of &quot;A Life of Science--in Gyms!&quot;"> </div> <span class="media-image-caption"> <p class="small-text">In his memoir, Doug Seals details the "challenges we faced performing NIH-funded research in an old gym designed for sport."</p> </span> </div></div><p>Despite the conditions, his lab secured continuous NIH funding, produced more than 350 peer-reviewed publications and trained more than 300 scientists across career stages from undergraduate to junior faculty.&nbsp;</p><p><strong>Living long and living well</strong></p><p>Woven through the memoir’s recap of institutional challenges is the science Seals has dedicated his career to. His lab’s central focus is the concept of extending ā€œhealthspanā€ā€”not just how long we live, but how long we live well.&nbsp;</p><p>ā€œIn biomedical aging research, ā€˜healthspan’ generally refers to the period of life that you retain good physical and cognitive function and are free of serious disease, whereas ā€˜lifespan’ is the entire period of life,ā€ Seals explains.&nbsp;</p><p>He notes the two don’t always align. A long life shadowed by disability or chronic disease is a far different proposition than one that stays healthy into its final decades.&nbsp;</p><p>Seals has spent 40 years researching what tips the scale in favor of the latter.&nbsp;</p><p>Seals has clear advice for those seeking to improve their healthspan: ā€œIf I could recommend that people do only one thing, it would be to exercise regularly—to be physically active. No other strategy comes close to exerting the health benefits of regular exercise on physical and cognitive function and prevention of chronic diseases,ā€ he says.&nbsp;</p><p>Diet, not smoking, and other factors matter.&nbsp;</p><p>ā€œBut the effects of regular exercise cannot be fully mimicked by any other lifestyle behavior or pill,ā€ Seals adds.&nbsp;</p><p><strong>In control of your fate</strong></p><p>One of the more challenging aspects of writing the memoir, Seals admits, was choosing what to talk about.&nbsp;</p><p>ā€œThe most difficult challenge was trying to make the book compelling to both scientists and non-scientists. I wanted to provide a lot of ā€˜insider insight’ for the layperson, while not boring academics reading the story,ā€ he says.&nbsp;</p><p>Through his careful curation of stories, the message he hopes to land is straightforward.&nbsp;</p><p>ā€œThe main message of the memoir is that you don’t need to come from the most educated family background, attend the most elite institutes of higher education, join the faculty of a top-ranked department or have the best research facilities to achieve and sustain success in your profession,ā€ he says.&nbsp;</p><p>ā€œYou are the ā€˜master of your fate,’ not your environment. Your determination, creativity and resilience are much more important to the outcome than external factors,ā€ Seals adds.&nbsp;</p><p>Seals lived this lesson before ever writing it down. She then joined the Rocky Mountain Taste and Smell Center at Āé¶¹Ćā·Ń°ęĻĀŌŲAnschutz Medical Campus as a postdoctoral fellow, eventually transitioning to a faculty position in the Modern Human Anatomy program at the Āé¶¹Ćā·Ń°ęĻĀŌŲSchool of Medicine, where she studied the interplay between taste and post-ingestive (gut) detection of food.&nbsp;</p><p>Guided by a lifelong love of teaching, Stratford left the Āé¶¹Ćā·Ń°ęĻĀŌŲSchool of Medicine in 2016 to pursue a full-time teaching career at Āé¶¹Ćā·Ń°ęĻĀŌŲBoulder. Since joining the <a href="/psych-neuro/" rel="nofollow">Department of Psychology and Neuroscience</a>, she has taught an unusually broad spectrum of courses, from large lower-division offerings such as General Psychology to advanced upper-level courses such as Clinical Neuroscience, and nearly every required class for the psychology major in between.</p><p>Her commitment to teaching also shapes her current research, which focuses on making neuroanatomy accessible to everyone. Drawing on her past connections to the Modern Human Anatomy program, Stratford is helping to develop accurate, detailed 3-D models of the human brain that anyone with an inexpensive 3-D printer can produce. While commercial brain models can cost hundreds of dollars, the models she is helping create can be made for a small fraction of that cost, making high-quality teaching tools more readily available to classrooms, students and curious learners.</p><p>In the classroom, Stratford is widely known for her kindness and enthusiasm, with a goal of making every class fun and memorable. For instance, students often comment that seeing and holding a real human brain in one of her courses is among the most memorable experiences of their college careers.</p><p>Her teaching philosophy is simple—make learning physical. Complicated biological processes, she believes, are far easier to understand when you can act them out, and she practices what she preaches. In a single day, she might help students mount brain tissue onto glass slides, get on her hands and knees to demonstrate how anatomical terms shift between humans (who walk on two legs) and other animals (who walk on four), and then join an impromptu class dance party to act out how neurons in the brain abnormally synchronize during an epileptic episode.</p><p>Above all, Stratford’s goal is to give students the knowledge and skills they need to advocate for themselves and the people they love.</p><p><span>ā€œI'm honored and humbled to receive the Cogswell Award,ā€ Stratford said. ā€œThere are so many gifted, devoted educators at Āé¶¹Ćā·Ń°ęĻĀŌŲBoulder that any recognition like this is partly a matter of luck, but I hope it draws attention to the care that passionate teachers bring to their work every day. Before November, it hadn’t been seen in its extremely limited Florida habitat since the 1960s.</p><div class="feature-layout-callout feature-layout-callout-medium"><div class="ucb-callout-content"> <div class="imageMediaStyle large_image_style"> <img loading="lazy" src="/asmagazine/sites/default/files/styles/large_image_style/public/2026-04/Ryan%20St%20Laurent%20Florida.jpg?itok=ya08Yly-" width="1500" height="2000" alt="Ryan St Laurent in Ocala National Forest"> </div> <span class="media-image-caption"> <p class="small-text"><span>Ryan St Laurent, a Āé¶¹Ćā·Ń°ęĻĀŌŲBoulder assistant professor of ecology and evolutionary biology and Āé¶¹Ćā·Ń°ęĻĀŌŲMuseum curator of entomology, traveled to Florida last week to try finding the elusive </span><em><span>Cicinnus albarenicolus </span></em><span>moth.</span></p> </span> </div></div><p>When news came that a collector had found one of the presumed-extinct moths in a sliver of white sand scrub in the Florida peninsula, St Laurent, a Āé¶¹Ćā·Ń°ęĻĀŌŲ assistant professor of <a href="/ebio/" rel="nofollow">ecology and evolutionary biology</a> and <a href="/cumuseum/" rel="nofollow">Āé¶¹Ćā·Ń°ęĻĀŌŲMuseum</a> curator of entomology, had just finished writing a <a href="https://zookeys.pensoft.net/article/181781/" rel="nofollow">recently published paper</a> describing the new <em>C. albarenicolus,</em> comparing it with other Mimallonidae species.</p><p>ā€œI had written that it might be extinct, so I had to revise the paper and bring in some additional co-authors,ā€ St Laurent says. Then he learned about an upcoming scheduled burn in one of the very few areas where <em>C. albarenicolus</em> conceivably could be found, so he booked a flight to Florida.</p><p>ā€œI don’t think this is the only population in existence, and I don’t think it’s going to get burned up and go extinct,ā€ St Laurent said several days before flying to Florida. ā€œBut I want to go out there and at least try to get a couple of tissue samples in the event we can’t find it again.ā€</p><p>Needles and haystacks don’t adequately encompass his aim; he was trying to find a small brown moth in a 450,000-acre forest.</p><p><strong>ā€˜These look really cool’</strong></p><p>But how does a scientist first steer his scholarship to a little-known and barely studied family of moths, a member of which may or may not have been extinct? For St Laurent, the path began during undergrad at Cornell, where he studied entomology and worked with museum insect collections. The collections manager encouraged him to find something that nobody else was working on, ā€œbut there was a lot of competition in butterflies and moths—it’s a popular group as far as insects go,ā€ he explains.&nbsp;</p><p>ā€œI remember going through the collection, asking, ā€˜What am I going to work on?’ when I came across this particular family (of moth). I was like, ā€˜Well, these look really cool,’ but when I went to try to curate them, I realized there were no resources, no books, no field guides, nothing.ā€</p><p>Perfect, he thought. If nobody was working on that family, he would. He wrote his undergraduate honors thesis then pursued his PhD in charting the phylogeny, or tree of life, of this small group of moths. ā€œOnce you have a tree of life, you can start talking about them and you can contextualize them as a member of bigger butterfly and moth groups,ā€ he says.</p><p>It wasn’t until St Laurent got to the Smithsonian for his postdoc that he had a chance to order mitochondrial sequencing on one of the Mimallonidae specimens that he’d identified as different from its family members. St Laurent worked with a Canadian lab that specializes in barcode sequencing—a technique that focuses on short sequences of genes—sending them prepared samples for testing. In one instance, St Laurent sampled the leg of one of the few recent specimens, which he put on a sequencing plate and sent to Canada in January, looking for further evidence that this was, in fact, a new species of moth.</p><p>The genes didn’t lie: It was.</p><p><strong>A moth flies out of the darkness</strong></p><p>As if discovering a new species isn’t a big enough deal, discovering that it’s not extinct after all is enough to drive any researcher from the lab and straight into the Florida thickets.</p><p>Among the things that make Mimallonidae<em>&nbsp;</em>interesting, St Laurent says<em>,</em> is they belong to a superfamily with ancient lineage—more than 100 million years old—99% of which live in Central and South America. Only a handful of species in the family occur in North America, but the ones that do are (mostly) quite common.</p><div class="feature-layout-callout feature-layout-callout-large"><div class="ucb-callout-content"><p>&nbsp;</p> <div class="imageMediaStyle large_image_style"> <img loading="lazy" src="/asmagazine/sites/default/files/styles/large_image_style/public/2026-04/Ryan%20St%20Laurent%20moth%20trap.jpg?itok=vuM-ewbI" width="1500" height="2000" alt="white, tent-like insect trap in the Florida Scrub"> </div> <span class="media-image-caption"> <p class="small-text">Ryan St Laurent set up four insect traps with moth-attractant LED lights.</p> </span> </div></div><p>Except, of course, for <em>C. albarenicolus</em>—endemic to small patches of Florida Scrub, made rarer still by habitat loss. ā€œOnly 10% of Florida Scrub is left,ā€ St Laurent said before leaving for Florida, ā€œand the scrub that does still exist is super isolated. We don’t know if those little pockets can support this moth at all.ā€</p><p>Through some scientific sleuthing and mapping the locations where collection specimens had been found, St Laurent narrowed possible <em>C.&nbsp;albarenicolus&nbsp;</em>habitat to six sites in the Florida peninsula: eastern Ocala National Forest, Weeki Wachee north of Tampa, Cassia and Cassadaga northeast of Orlando, the Archbold Biological Station on the Lake Wales Ridge in Central Florida and coastal southeast Florida in Port Sewall. Each location has or had the rare Florida Scrub habitat—specifically white sand, open canopy scrub, which <em>C.&nbsp;albarenicolus </em>seemed to favor.&nbsp;</p><p>ā€œThis particular family of moths, there’s a reason nobody studies them,ā€ St Laurent said before leaving for Florida. ā€œThey’re really hard to find and really hard to raise in captivity. I’ve done field work all over the Americas, and I’m lucky if I see one or two a night in Central or South America. I’m very used to not being able to find these things, which is why I do a lot of work in collections.ā€</p><p>Still, he had to try. He flew to Orlando and then drove to the township of Cassia. He had previously seen a specimen in the American Museum of Natural History in New York City that had been found near Cassia in 1964. ā€œI knew about that specimen, I knew the scrub in that area because I went hiking there years ago in grad school and found caterpillars, but I didn’t rear them,ā€ St Laurent says, so that’s where he started.</p><p>The first night, he set up four traps resembling tall, narrow tents with a specialized moth-attractive LED inside—the aim being to lure insects to the light. Other insects arrived in the thousands, but no <em>C.&nbsp;albarenicolus.</em></p><p>The second night, he set up at a spot in the nearby Seminole State Forest where the trees open to an expanse of sandy soil and scrubby plants. At 8:49 p.m., ā€œI’m standing there and this kind of pinkish moth comes out of the darkness, and it was very recognizable. Nothing else really looks like that, moth-wise.ā€</p><p>After that first moth, two more came. St Laurent knew he was seeing females, which fly right after sunset, so he collected them and raced them to his colleagues at the University of Florida in Gainesville. Collecting live females means collecting eggs, with the attendant potential of rearing them in the lab. If his colleagues are able to rear them, he says, he will receive progenitors and offspring.</p><p>As for seeing a moth that he’d only previously seen as a collection specimen, ā€œI was just like, ā€˜Wow, I was right! It is here!’ My suspicion is the moth is all over the place in Ocala, but it’s rare and diffuse there. It’s a much more concentrated site in Seminole, surrounded by hardwood hammocks and the St. Johns and Wekiva rivers, so you have a better chance of finding something there.ā€&nbsp;</p><p>The site in the Ocala National Forest is scheduled for a controlled burn associated with Florida scrub jay management, ā€œwhich is probably good in the overall grand scheme of things,ā€ St Laurent says, ā€œbut since we don’t know what the moth eats or when it’s active or its annual lifecycle or habitat requirements, I don’t know if the burning regime is appropriate.</p><p>ā€œ(The moth is) part of Florida’s multimillion-year history, and Florida is the only place in the world where it occurs. It may not be some top-down species that’s controlling the habitat, but it’s still a very important representative of the one-sixth of its family that’s found in North America, and this one is the only species endemic to the U.S. in this family. mid-grade novel&nbsp;</em>Confessions of a Mango<em>, writing team Katheryn Lumsden and Nathan Pieplow explore the challenges of navigating middle school with a dyslexia diagnosis</em></p><hr><p>Have you ever felt like the mango in a line of lovebirds? Sure, you <em>look&nbsp;</em>like you fit in—same general shape, same red, yellow and green coloring—but, well, you’re a mango and everyone else is a bird.</p><p>That’s how Ruby Emmerson feels at Benton Academy, where she’s starting sixth grade with her twin brother, Bryce. But while Bryce is an academic high achiever who likely will excel at the competitive charter school, Ruby’s diagnoses of dyslexia, dysgraphia and dyscalculia mean that reading, writing and math are tough for her.</p><p>And when she fails her first test at Benton, wow, does she feel like a mango. She even writes a brief blog post about it: ā€œI dont belong at Benton Acadamy. I’m an imposter. I walk beside you in the halls every day. But I’m not smart enuff to stay much longer. Theres so much work. Just as readers likely will.</p><p>Ruby’s are the confessions in <a href="https://www.hachettebookgroup.com/titles/kate-lumsden/confessions-of-a-mango/9780316586078/?lens=little-brown-books-for-young-readers" rel="nofollow"><em>Confessions of a Mango</em></a>, a mid-grade novel published this week and written by Katheryn Lumsden, a Āé¶¹Ćā·Ń°ęĻĀŌŲ <a href="/mcdb/" rel="nofollow">molecular, cellular and developmental biology</a> alumna, and <a href="/pwr/people/faculty/nathan-pieplow-med" rel="nofollow">Nathan Pieplow</a>, an associate teaching professor in the <a href="/pwr/" rel="nofollow">Program for Writing and Rhetoric</a>.</p><p>But for the purposes of this book, they are Kate and Nate, a writing team with <em>way</em> too many ideas and <em>way</em> too little time, and a shared passion for telling honest stories with humor and empathy.</p><p>ā€œThis is the first creative partnership I’ve been in that works,ā€ Pipelow says. ā€œWe bicker like siblings, but the beautiful thing about writing with Katheryn is she’s an idea factory. She can write 2,000 words in an afternoon, then she sends them to me, and I don’t have to start with a blank page.ā€</p><p>ā€œI’m the sloppy copy,ā€ she says.</p><p>ā€œI contribute ideas,ā€ he says.</p><p>ā€œHe’s the atmosphere and the voice. Ironically, <em>Mango</em> didn’t have my voice until he added it.ā€</p><p>It just works, they conclude.</p><p><strong>A writing partnership is born</strong></p><p>Pieplow and Lumsden met, unsurprisingly, in a Boulder writing group six years ago. Lumsden, a pharmacist by profession, was a longtime group member who wanted a community of support to help her wrangle her boundless ideas. Pieplow, who had authored two field guides to bird sounds, wanted to delve into fiction writing.</p><p>ā€œEveryone was like, ā€˜Why is he here? Their first book was a young adult historical fantasy that was good enough to get them their agent, Sarah Fisk, but it wasn’t bought by a publisher. The next novel wasn’t, either.</p><p>ā€œIf you want to be a fiction writer, you write several (books) and if one doesn’t get published, you move on to the next,ā€ Lumsden says.</p><p>ā€œ(<em>Confessions of a Mango</em>) is definitely our debut,ā€ Pieplow adds. ā€œThe first two were not quite at this level; with our first ones we were playing with form and voice.ā€</p><p>In fact, Fisk told them that the most important thing to get right when writing mid-grade or young adult fiction is the voice, Lumsden says, ā€œand fortunately, voice has always been one of the things I do well.ā€</p><p>The idea for <em>Confessions of a Mango</em> germinated from many seeds. Lumsden grew up in Boulder with a twin brother who, like Bryce, was considered the ā€œsmartā€ one. Lumsden struggled with reading, and their mom, not wanting to make Lumsden feel bad, took both of them for dyslexia testing, explaining it away with ā€œpeople are interested in twins.ā€</p><p>She did learn to navigate dyslexia, however, so when she was 12, her mom brought home a cake as a sort of ā€œCongratulations for outgrowing dyslexia!ā€ celebration. ā€œExcept it wasn’t until much later that I found out you don’t actually outgrow dyslexia,ā€ Lumsden says.</p><p>She also read <em>Overcoming Dyslexia</em> by Sally Shaywitz and ideas began percolating. So, when Pieplow went on a birding trip for a month, Lumsden grew impatient waiting for his return and started writing a book.</p><p><strong>Making it realistic and relatable</strong></p><p>ā€œPart of it was that I was so angry,ā€ she explains. ā€œSo often, these kids (diagnosed with dyslexia) don’t know how smart they truly are, and that’s so unfair. The teachers and administrators at the school are supportive, and the other kids may be squirrelly sometimes, but they’re otherwise normal, decent kids.</p><p>ā€œI grew up in Boulder and my husband and I are raising our kids in Boulder, and the parents here are fantastic, but sometimes there can be this feeling of life or death if you don’t do well (in school),ā€ Lumsden says. ā€œThere isn’t a lot of room to fail, and people sometimes won’t even say the word ā€˜fail’ to kids. But it’s important that kids know sometimes they’ll fail and it’s not the end of the world.ā€</p><p>When Fisk began pitching their draft to publishers—after suggesting they excise this chapter and add that chapter, and put in more about Ruby’s quirky best friend, Thea—Little, Brown was the first to make an offer and was the publisher they ultimately chose.</p><p>Part of that decision, they say, was the kindness that Little, Brown staff showed them throughout the publishing process—how included they felt in every step and how Little, Brown representatives embraced the dyslexia angle of their story. In fact, <em>Confessions of a Mango</em> is printed in the Lexend font, which improves reading performance and reduces visual stress for people with dyslexia.</p><p>They even had a significant say in the vibrant book cover, which shows a girl seated in the shadow of a huge mango with a lovebird perched on its leaf. When they and artist Andy Smith settled on two cover finalists, they asked Lumsden’s son and his friends to vote for their favorite one.</p><p>Now, in publication week, a three-year process is finally tangible with the book in readers’ hands. It’s a book close to their hearts, Lumsden says, and they’re proud of the story it tells and the children to whom it gives a literary voice.</p><p><span>But, well, on to the next.
