Having benefited from AOS through collaborations, mentorship networks and opportunities to engage with cutting-edge research, I am motivated to give back in a leadership role.ā€&nbsp;</p><p>His involvement with AOS has included serving on committees, organizing symposia and building inclusive community spaces at annual meetings</p><p>ā€œI am particularly interested in helping the Society continue to foster a vibrant, inclusive and forward-looking ornithological community while supporting early-career scientists, strengthening connections across disciplines and engaging in effective outreach,ā€ he noted in his candidate statement.</p><p>Taylor, who grew up in rural southern Ontario, earned his undergraduate degree in wildlife biology at the University of Guelph and his PhD at Queen’s University. He completed a postdoctoral fellowship in the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and worked as a field biologist in South America.</p><p>As principal investigator of the <a href="/lab/taylor/" rel="nofollow">Taylor Lab</a>, he leads research focused on hybridization, speciation, evolutionary ecology and population genomics, primarily of birds. He and his colleagues pursue research using&nbsp;natural hybrid zones and recent radiations to understand the genetic bases of traits involved in reproductive isolation, population divergence and&nbsp;speciation, and&nbsp;the impacts of anthropogenic change, including climate change, on species distributions, interactions and evolution.&nbsp;</p><p>Taylor also is host of the podcast ā€œ<a href="https://www.okaybutbirds.com/" rel="nofollow">Okay, But… Birds</a>,ā€ which has addressed topics ranging from whether birds invented music to how wildfire smoke affects birds and a rumination on whether <a href="https://www.okaybutbirds.com/episodes/e9" rel="nofollow">birdwatching is the original PokĆ©mon</a> with Pulitzer Prize-winning science writer Ed Yong.</p><p>ā€œBeing elected to AOS Council is an honor,ā€ Taylor said. ā€œI have long worked to help the AOS become a more inclusive society and am impressed by the dedication of the society to their members. Sloan Foundation Matter-to-Life</a> program.</p><p>The two-year, $594,487 grant will support Betterton’s ongoing research on microtubules, the small, long tubes inside cells that serve several functions and that Betterton’s research suggests may be less fixed and static than previously thought.</p><p>The Sloan Matter-to-Life program aims ā€œto sharpen our scientific understanding of the physical principles and mechanisms that distinguish living systems from inanimate matter, and to explore the conditions under which physical principles and mechanisms guide the complexification of matter towards life.ā€</p><div class="feature-layout-callout feature-layout-callout-medium"><div class="ucb-callout-content"> <div class="imageMediaStyle large_image_style"> <img loading="lazy" src="/asmagazine/sites/default/files/styles/large_image_style/public/2026-08/Meredith%20Betterton.jpg?itok=ejo_x9dP" width="1500" height="2250" alt="portrait of Meredith Betterton"> </div> <span class="media-image-caption"> <p class="small-text">Āé¶¹Ćā·Ń°ęĻĀŌŲBoulder scientist Meredith Betterton has been awarded a <span>two-year, $594,487 grant from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation Matter-to-Life program.&nbsp;</span></p> </span> </div></div><p>Betterton and her research colleagues study microtubules in cells, which help maintain cell structure similar to how beams support a building and also act like highways that move traffic along, she explains.&nbsp;</p><p>ā€œBecause (microtubules) have this important role as highways that things stick to and then move along, people have thought about them as being kind of fixed,ā€ she says. ā€œYou build a microtubule, it’s there to be a highway and then it’s pretty static.</p><p>ā€œThe thought has been that once they’re there (in the cell), they sit there. Our project has to do with the idea that there might be subtle changes within the (microtubule) structure that act as a signal that sends information—so they act in some ways not as a highway, but like a telephone wire that’s sending signals.ā€</p><p><strong>Building with bricks</strong></p><p>Microtubules are built of subunits, called tubulin, that can be compared to bricks, Betterton explains. These tubulin ā€œbricksā€ are known to make small internal changes to their shape and size; what hasn’t been known is what happens to the rest of the tubulin in the microtubule if one changes. ā€œImagine packing a lot of bricks together in a wall,ā€ she says. ā€œIf you change the shape of one, what happens to the others nearby?ā€</p><p>Several years ago, Betterton and her research group, in collaboration with another team of research colleagues including Radhika Subramanian and Sithara S. Wijeratne at Harvard Medical School, <a href="https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/2020.12.23.424221v1" rel="nofollow">were studying ā€œtrafficā€</a> along microtubules, which is done by motor proteins. These proteins take ā€œstepsā€ along the microtubule. They also can pile up and cause traffic jams, so Betterton and her colleagues were studying those jams to better understand the motors.&nbsp;</p><p>The researchers discovered this phenomenon because the math wasn’t working. ā€œIn my group we were working on mathematical modeling of this, and we couldn’t get the model to work,ā€ she says. ā€œWe put in measurements, and the equations gave us predictions that were really different from what experiments showed. We found the only way we could get the model to make sense was if something was happening where the motors could talk to each other over really long distances.ā€</p><p>While this action happens on a nanometer scale, ā€œif you scaled it up it would be as if, when you’re driving a car, you could know there’s another car two miles away and how fast it’s driving,ā€ she says. ā€œThat really was the initial discovery—this weird, long-range effect that we didn’t know where it was coming from.ā€</p><p>Other research had explored the conformational transitions, or structural shifts in tubulin, and how motor proteins can stick to microtubules and change their state if they bind in large numbers. Betterton and her research group are exploring whether a change of state can happen when motor proteins bind in small numbers and send signals over long distances.</p><p><strong>How cells process information</strong></p><p>A key aspect of this research, Betterton says, is it explores a different paradigm for how to think about these particular molecules in cells and aims for broader understanding of the way cells process information.</p><p>For example, she says, much is known about how neurons in the brain send electrical signals—a vital process for information transmission in the brain—but that process ā€œcan only happen in that one type of cell, whereas microtubules are in every cell,ā€ Betterton says. ā€œThey could be sensing something happening in one part of the cell, so we’re studying this new way that cells could be responding.ā€</p><p>She adds that there are various potential applications for this avenue of research, including developing more targeted chemotherapy drugs: ā€œThere’s one (tubulin) that seems to be resistant to this subtle expansion and contraction. Recent work shows that makes them not as responsive to chemotherapy drugs. Because microtubules are involved in cell division, some first-line chemotherapy drugs for cancer act against microtubules.</p><p>ā€œWhat has been discovered is that some cancers can resist these chemotherapy drugs by switching to this other type of tubulin that doesn’t change shape as well,ā€ she says, adding that understanding more about tubulin expansion and contraction could possibly lead to more effective drugs.</p><p>There also could be potential applications in the physics of materials and using microtubules and motor proteins to make new types of materials that are more tunable to specific functions.</p><p><span>ā€œThe Sloan program is interested in this research because this specific program is called Matter-to-Life,ā€ Betterton says. ā€œWhat that’s trying to say of matter is that it’s some collections of molecules, but what about it becomes different between something that’s inert versus something that could be more alive? Wieman Award for Excellence, a new honor presented by the Association for Undergraduate Education at Research Universities (UERU). &nbsp;</p><p>The award recognizes research university departments and offices that demonstrate a sustained commitment to teaching excellence and high-quality undergraduate education. It also carries special significance because the award is named for Carl E. Wieman, one of the department’s most distinguished faculty members.</p><p>Wieman received the 2001 Nobel Prize in Physics while a faculty member at Āé¶¹Ćā·Ń°ęĻĀŌŲBoulder, sharing the prize with Āé¶¹Ćā·Ń°ęĻĀŌŲBoulder physics professor and JILA fellow Eric Cornell. Their groundbreaking work achieved the world’s first Bose-Einstein condensate. Wieman and Cornell’s scientific accomplishments helped elevate Āé¶¹Ćā·Ń°ęĻĀŌŲBoulder’s international reputation in physics.</p><p>Wieman’s impact extends well beyond the laboratory. Following his Nobel Prize-winning research, he launched the <a href="https://phet.colorado.edu/" rel="nofollow">PhET initiative</a> focused on improving science education and went on to become an internationally recognized scholar of teaching and learning. He later returned to Āé¶¹Ćā·Ń°ęĻĀŌŲBoulder as a science education advisor and collaborator, helping advance efforts to improve teaching effectiveness and student learning across STEM disciplines. &nbsp;</p><p>Today, his influence continues through research, mentorship and scholarship, including his recent book, <a href="https://www.routledge.com/How-to-Learn-to-Think-like-a-Skilled-Engineer-or-Scientist-and-How-to-Teach-It/Wieman/p/book/9789815352191" rel="nofollow"><em>How to Learn to Think Like a Skilled Engineer or Scientist and How to Teach It</em></a>.</p><p>That legacy is reflected in the work now being recognized. According to UERU, the Department of Physics was selected for its leadership in rethinking teaching evaluation. Drawing on the department's internationally recognized contributions to physics education research, faculty leaders developed approaches that use multiple measures to evaluate instructional excellence and support effective teaching. Conklin Medal from the Society for Developmental Biology.</span></a><span>&nbsp;</span></p><p><span>A distinguished professor of </span><a href="/mcdb/" rel="nofollow"><span>molecular, cellular and developmental biology</span></a><span> at the Āé¶¹Ćā·Ń°ęĻĀŌŲ, Niswander joins a group of researchers recognized for their exceptional contributions to developmental biology and their dedication to training the next generation of scientists.</span></p><p><span>Named after Edwin G. Conklin Medal from the Society for Developmental Biology (SDB). I thank SDB for nurturing my career and the education and careers of my trainees through the years,ā€ said Niswander.&nbsp;ā€œI am extremely pleased to share in the honor of this award with all of my current and former trainees whose research drove our discoveries and revealed the wonders of the embryo.ā€</span></p><p><span>This award follows on the heels of Niswander earlier this year receiving the&nbsp;</span><a href="/today/2026/04/29/distinguished-professor-lee-niswander-wins-hazel-barnes-prize" rel="nofollow"><span>2026 Hazel Barnes Prize</span></a><span> and being elected as a member of the National Academy of Sciences.</span></p><p><span>Niswander is described by her peers and trainees as a generous mentor, thoughtful leader and a disarmingly humble scientist.&nbsp;</span></p><p><span>ā€œLee is fearless,ā€ said Maria Barna, Niswander’s former graduate student who now runs her own lab at Stanford. ā€œ[She] has instilled that in me."</span></p><p><span>Niswander’s work has shaped scientists’ understanding of how the body plan arises in early embryos. Her seminal contributions range from work on FGF signaling in limb development to the role of cell cilia during early organ development, and, more recently, efforts to understand the mechanisms underlying human neural tube defects.</span></p><p><span><strong>'Wow, this is really cool'</strong></span></p><p><span>Niswander originally became interested in research as an undergraduate at the Āé¶¹Ćā·Ń°ęĻĀŌŲ, where she first stepped into a lab through a work-study program. ā€œOnce I started to do research, I was like, ā€˜Wow, this is really cool,ā€™ā€ she recalled.</span></p><p><span>That exposure led Niswander to graduate school at Case Western Reserve University, where she joined the developmental biology program. She remembers thinking, ā€œI don’t know anything about development … I’m going to do that,ā€ before joining the lab of Terry Magnuson, PhD.</span></p><p><span>Her dissertation work used genetic deletions in mice to probe which regions of chromosome 7 are necessary for embryonic development. She spent time in Sweden learning a specialized technique that helped her complete the work.&nbsp;</span></p><p><span>ā€œThere’s no need to reinvent the wheel if somebody else knows how to do it,ā€ she said. ā€œGo learn from an expert.ā€</span></p><p><span>After completing her PhD, Niswander joined the lab of Gail Martin, PhD, at the University of California, San Francisco, as a postdoctoral fellow. She began working on limb development, a topic no one else in the lab was pursuing at the time, and trained further at University College London with Cheryll Tickle, PhD, a leading expert in the field.&nbsp;</span></p><p><span>During this work, she found expression of FGF4 in the apical ectodermal ridge (AER) is sufficient for limb outgrowth—a finding that reflected the technical curiosity and willingness to seek outside expertise that would come to define her approach to science.&nbsp;</span></p><p><span>On her first day as a principal investigator, Niswander walked into an empty lab at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City.&nbsp;</span></p><p><span>ā€œIt’s just me … I can’t believe they let me do this,ā€ she remembers thinking. This marked the beginning of her independent research career. Soon after, Niswander began a collaboration with Kathryn Anderson, PhD, launching a large-scale forward genetic screen for developmental mutants in mice.&nbsp;</span></p><p><span>One major finding to emerge from the screen was in identifying ciliary proteins that help integrate Hedgehog signaling during organogenesis, which Barna describes as, ā€œdogma changing.ā€ The findings reconceptualized cilia from passive ā€œcellular antennasā€ into active signaling hubs that drive decisions about development. ā€œThe cilia is not just a boring antenna that's sticking out of the cell but is like a major signaling center also," Barna noted.&nbsp;</span></p><div class="feature-layout-callout feature-layout-callout-large"><div class="ucb-callout-content"><blockquote><p class="lead"><i class="fa-solid fa-quote-left fa-2x ucb-icon-color-gold">&nbsp;</i><span>&nbsp;</span><em><span>I am extremely pleased to share in the honor of this award with all of my current and former trainees whose research drove our discoveries and revealed the wonders of the embryo.ā€</span></em></p></blockquote></div></div><p><span><strong>Seeking the bigger picture</strong></span></p><p><span>Niswander later returned to the&nbsp;Āé¶¹Ćā·Ń°ęĻĀŌŲ, where her work expanded from identifying genes linked to neural tube defects to probing the broader underlying mechanisms.&nbsp;"[Niswander] was looking for a way to plug in some of these basic discoveries into human health even more,ā€ said Barna.&nbsp;</span></p><p><span>Neural tube defects remain a central focus of her current work, reflecting her broader approach to science: ā€œI’d be bored to tears to study anything at one level. I want to see things in that bigger picture,ā€ she explained.&nbsp;</span></p><p><span>Niswander continues to teach limb development as a way of sharing what she finds most compelling about developmental biology and modeling the mentorship style she values.&nbsp;</span></p><p><span>ā€œI still teach limb development because I think it's such an easy system for somebody to say, ā€˜Oh yeah, why are my fingers here and my shoulder there?ā€™ā€ she said.&nbsp;</span></p><p><span>Although her research has since expanded beyond questions of limb development, her postdoctoral findings still stand out to her. Remove the AER and limb growth stalls; replace its signal with FGF and the limb continues to grow.&nbsp;</span></p><p><span>ā€œI still find it astounding,ā€ she said, ā€œthat you can take off this whole strip of tissue – the apical ridge – and just put back in FGF, and the limb will continue to grow.ā€</span></p><p><span>Across her independent career, Niswander has trained nearly 50 graduate students and postdoctoral researchers who have gone on to careers in science and beyond: professors, scientists, journalists and editors.&nbsp;</span></p><p><span>ā€œI have no preconceived notions that somebody’s going to be like me,ā€ Niswander said. ā€œI give people opportunities all the time to pursue the career path that they want."&nbsp;</span></p><p><span>For Niswander, what has made it all worthwhile comes without hesitation.&nbsp;</span></p><p><span>"The people are my legacy,ā€ she said. "None of this would be fun if you didn't have people in your lab. I live vicariously through all the wonderful people that have come through my lab."&nbsp;</span></p><p><span>Barna saw that approach firsthand.&nbsp;</span></p><p><span>ā€œShe encouraged this kind of bold and free way of doing science in the lab that I try to emulate,ā€ said Barna. ā€œBut it’s very difficult to emulate Lee."</span></p><p><span>Niswander began her work at a single lab bench as an undergraduate, but her career has since evolved into one that has moved across institutions and continents, produced work spanning human disease and developmental biology, and trained dozens of scientists. Her&nbsp;</span><a href="https://science.nasa.gov/astrobiology/strategy/dares/nasa-dares-task-force-2-page-2/" rel="nofollow"><span lang="EN">research on cyanobacterial biofilms</span></a><span lang="EN"> seeks to understand the connections between microbial physiology, mineral precipitation and stromatolite (a layered, rock-like formation built by microbial communities) formation using stable isotope geochemistry and experimental evolution.</span></p><p><span lang="EN">From October 2026 to April 2027, Fontana’s SCGSR award will support her study at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California, where she will work closely with Rhona Stuart, who leads the DOE’s MicroBiospheres Scientific Focus Area. The DOE laboratory offers Fontana the opportunity to leverage a stable isotope technique called NanoSIMS to track variation in stable isotope composition at the micron-scale level.</span></p><p><span lang="EN">The project, ā€œTracking Carbon Flow in Cyanobacteria Biofilms and Their Mineral Byproduct,ā€ explores ā€œhow carbon moves through cyanobacterial biofilms and the extent to which this carbon contributes to minerals they make, like carbonate, that eventually turns them into rocks, like stromatolites,ā€ she explains, adding that her work is especially meaningful in the context of developing next-generation biotechnologies in which cyanobacteria and their biofilms may be an innovative foundation for bioeconomy products.</span></p><p><span lang="EN"><strong>Charting the future of NASA astrobiology</strong></span></p><p><span lang="EN">Additionally, after a highly competitive open-call application, Fontana was selected as one of nine early-career scientists to serve on the 49-member NASA-DARES Task Force 2.&nbsp;Composed of members of the astrobiology community, NASA-DARES, or NASA’s</span><a href="https://science.nasa.gov/astrobiology/strategy/dares/" rel="nofollow"><span lang="EN">&nbsp;Decadal Astrobiology Research and Exploration Strategy</span></a><span lang="EN">, will serve as a roadmap for the organization’s future astrobiology research, which aims to</span><a href="https://astrobiology.nasa.gov/about/" rel="nofollow"><span lang="EN">&nbsp;understand life’s origins, evolution and distribution across the universe.</span></a></p><p><span lang="EN">Since January, NASA-DARES Task Force 2 has been building on</span><a href="https://science.nasa.gov/astrobiology/strategy/dares/" rel="nofollow"><span lang="EN">&nbsp;the nine major focus areas</span></a><span lang="EN">—which include comparative planetology to understand habitability and astrobiology in society, among others—identified by Task Force 1 by gathering community input through virtual webinars and public discussions. Task Force 2 is currently synthesizing community perspectives into a document outlining contemporary astrobiological interests, available opportunities and the diverse scientific approaches and disciplines in motion across NASA Science.</span></p><p><span lang="EN">As the executive secretary of Focus Area 8, Early Career and Workforce Development, Fontana has worked with her team to solicit and synthesize community input regarding how NASA can best support early-career astrobiologists and develop the field over the next decade.</span></p><p><span lang="EN">ā€œAs an early career researcher passionate about the future of astrobiology, I am profoundly honored to be part of NASA-DARES,ā€ says Fontana. ā€œAs the only early-career member of the ā€˜Early Career and Workforce Development’ focus area, I feel a strong responsibility to represent early-career voices and perspectives.&nbsp;This role provides me with a unique opportunity to help shape the chapter’s findings and contribute to pivotal conversations about the future of astrobiology.ā€</span></p><p><span lang="EN">NASA-DARES is still soliciting feedback: The </span><a href="https://science.nasa.gov/astrophysics/programs/physics-of-the-cosmos/community/nasa-dares-draft-strategy-open-for-public-comment/" rel="nofollow"><span lang="EN">public comment period</span></a><span lang="EN"> for NASA-DARES is open this month and close July 2. This funding gives us the ability to compare infant microbiomes across the globe using cutting-edge immunological and bioinformatics techniques. We hope this work will ultimately lead to the development of strategies to restore the infant microbiome to its historical state to prevent immune diseases before they start.ā€</p><p>Olm, who earned his bachelor’s degree at the University of Pittsburgh and his PhD at the University of California Berkeley, leads the <a href="/iphy/research/integrative-microbiome-research-laboratory" rel="nofollow">Integrative Microbiome Research Laboratory</a>, where he and his research colleagues study the human microbiome as ā€œan entire ecosystem of microscopic organisms that live on our skin and inside our body. These microbes are integrated into our immune, digestive and nervous systems and are critical to our overall wellbeing.ā€</p><p>Olm and his colleagues aim to increase understanding of the human microbiome and its connections to physiology and to apply these findings to improve human health using cutting-edge, computer-based analysis and experimental techniques to study the microbiome.</p><p>The lab’s current research topics include:</p><ul><li>From where do we get our microbiome? How do our microbes spread from person to person?</li><li>How does the infant gut microbiome influence the development of allergies and auto-immune disease?</li><li>How does our intestinal immune system control our gut microbiome? How do failures in this control lead to disease?</li></ul><p><strong>About the awards program</strong></p><p>Since it began, the Webb-Waring Biomedical Research Awards Program has supported 121 Boettcher Investigators, including this year’s class, and awarded almost $29 million in grant funding. These researchers have gone on to secure more than $150 million in additional research funding from federal, state and private sources. href="/psych-neuro/jennifer-stratford" rel="nofollow">Jennifer Stratford</a>, a Āé¶¹Ćā·Ń°ęĻĀŌŲ teaching professor of <a href="/psych-neuro/" rel="nofollow">psychology and neuroscience</a>, has been named the 2026 Cogswell Award for Inspirational Instruction winner.</p><p>The Cogswell Award is named in honor of and supported by a generous donation from Craig Cogswell, a three-time alumnus of Āé¶¹Ćā·Ń°ęĻĀŌŲBoulder. She then joined the Rocky Mountain Taste and Smell Center at Āé¶¹Ćā·Ń°ęĻĀŌŲAnschutz Medical Campus as a postdoctoral fellow, eventually transitioning to a faculty position in the Modern Human Anatomy program at the Āé¶¹Ćā·Ń°ęĻĀŌŲSchool of Medicine, where she studied the interplay between taste and post-ingestive (gut) detection of food.&nbsp;</p><p>Guided by a lifelong love of teaching, Stratford left the Āé¶¹Ćā·Ń°ęĻĀŌŲSchool of Medicine in 2016 to pursue a full-time teaching career at Āé¶¹Ćā·Ń°ęĻĀŌŲBoulder. Since joining the <a href="/psych-neuro/" rel="nofollow">Department of Psychology and Neuroscience</a>, she has taught an unusually broad spectrum of courses, from large lower-division offerings such as General Psychology to advanced upper-level courses such as Clinical Neuroscience, and nearly every required class for the psychology major in between.</p><p>Her commitment to teaching also shapes her current research, which focuses on making neuroanatomy accessible to everyone. Drawing on her past connections to the Modern Human Anatomy program, Stratford is helping to develop accurate, detailed 3-D models of the human brain that anyone with an inexpensive 3-D printer can produce. While commercial brain models can cost hundreds of dollars, the models she is helping create can be made for a small fraction of that cost, making high-quality teaching tools more readily available to classrooms, students and curious learners.</p><p>In the classroom, Stratford is widely known for her kindness and enthusiasm, with a goal of making every class fun and memorable. For instance, students often comment that seeing and holding a real human brain in one of her courses is among the most memorable experiences of their college careers.</p><p>Her teaching philosophy is simple—make learning physical. Complicated biological processes, she believes, are far easier to understand when you can act them out, and she practices what she preaches. In a single day, she might help students mount brain tissue onto glass slides, get on her hands and knees to demonstrate how anatomical terms shift between humans (who walk on two legs) and other animals (who walk on four), and then join an impromptu class dance party to act out how neurons in the brain abnormally synchronize during an epileptic episode.</p><p>Above all, Stratford’s goal is to give students the knowledge and skills they need to advocate for themselves and the people they love.</p><p><span>ā€œI'm honored and humbled to receive the Cogswell Award,ā€ Stratford said. ā€œThere are so many gifted, devoted educators at Āé¶¹Ćā·Ń°ęĻĀŌŲBoulder that any recognition like this is partly a matter of luck, but I hope it draws attention to the care that passionate teachers bring to their work every day. It recognizes achievement in science by election to membership, and—with the National Academy of Engineering and the National Academy of Medicine—provides science, engineering and health policy advice to the federal government and other organizations.</p><div class="feature-layout-callout feature-layout-callout-medium"><div class="ucb-callout-content"> <div class="imageMediaStyle large_image_style"> <img loading="lazy" src="/asmagazine/sites/default/files/styles/large_image_style/public/2026-05/Lee%20Niswander.jpg?itok=JEUGVDsy" width="1500" height="1921" alt="portrait of Lee Niswander"> </div> <span class="media-image-caption"> <p class="small-text">Lee Niswander is <span>a distinguished professor of molecular, cellular and developmental biology.</span></p> </span> </div></div><p><strong>Pursuing clinical therapies</strong></p><p>Niswander is head of the Niswander Lab, where she and her group investigate mouse models of embryonic development to provide insights into fundamental developmental processes, major human birth defects and potential clinical therapies. Her studies have revealed the molecular mechanisms that control formation of the central and peripheral nervous system, as well as lung, limb and neuromuscular development.</p><p>Niswander’s current focus is on early brain formation and birth defects that arise when normal brain formation goes awry, like failure of neural tube closure or maintenance of neural progenitor cells, resulting in spina bifida or microcephaly.</p><p>The Niswander Lab uses the mouse embryo and human-induced pluripotent stem cells as models of human development. The lab’s studies encompass genetics, epigenetics, environmental factors and live imaging to couple molecular insights to cell behaviors. Through collaborative efforts, Niswander Lab researchers are also exploring the genetic causes of neural tube defects in humans.</p><p>Niswander recently received the Hazel Barnes Prize, which celebrates the enriching interrelationship between teaching and research. It is the largest and most prestigious award funded by the university. This summer she will be honored with an Edwin G. Conklin Medal, which is awarded annually by the Society for Developmental Biology (SDB) to recognize a developmental biologist who has made and is continuing to make extraordinary research contributions to the field and is an excellent mentor, helping train the next generation of outstanding scientists.</p><p>Niswander received her bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Āé¶¹Ćā·Ń°ęĻĀŌŲBoulder, her master’s degree in biochemistry and genetics from University of Colorado Health Sciences Center (now Āé¶¹Ćā·Ń°ęĻĀŌŲAnschutz) and her doctorate in genetics from Case Western University. She performed her postdoctoral training in developmental biology at the University of California San Francisco.</p><p>ā€œI am deeply honored to become a member of the National Academy of Sciences,ā€ Niswander says. ā€œI am grateful to the numerous trainees and their research discoveries that provided the foundation of this honor. Her research focuses on water in the solar system, the evolution of habitable worlds and remote sensing techniques and instruments for planetary missions.&nbsp;</p><p><span>Ehlmann is a science team member of multiple missions, including the Jupiter-bound Europa Clipper; the Earth-orbiting EMIT imaging spectrometer; the Mars Science Laboratory Curiosity rover; the Mars2020 Perseverance rover; the ExoMars rover; and orbiting and landed spectrometers for the Artemis lunar program. Previously, she was a science team member for the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter CRISM instrument, the Dawn mission during its exploration of the asteroid Ceres, the Mars Exploration Rovers Spirit and Opportunity and principal investigator of Lunar Trailblazer.</span></p><p><span>Active in science policy and outreach, Ehlmann is president of the board of directors of The Planetary Society. She served as a member of the National Academies Planetary Science and Astrobiology Decadal Survey and the National Academies Committee on Astrobiology and Planetary Science.
