Freya Nagy (Psych, Neuro’27) of Lakewood, Colorado always had her sights set on attending �鶹��Ѱ��Boulder. What she found was a community that quickly felt like home.

While exploring ways to get involved at the Be Involved Fair, Freya found Senior Class Council (SCC), a student-led group dedicated to building connections and celebrating the senior experience. The opportunity to bring students together excitedly stood out.

Now serving as the senior gift manager for SCC, Freya helps lead fundraising efforts for the Senior Class Gift, including the Seniors Creating Future Buffs scholarship, which supports future �鶹��Ѱ��Boulder students.

This student-contribution led effort reflects a powerful tradition of seniors giving back to support the next generation of Forever Buffs to begin their journey at �鶹��Ѱ��Boulder.

What is your favorite part about being SCC’s senior gift manager?

The people I get to work with are my favorite part of this position. The current director, Aly Young, is one of the most driven, hardworking people I’ve ever met, and it’s genuinely inspiring to get to work alongside her. It’s also incredible to be a part of the scholarship process here at CU. Getting to play even a small role in making college a little more accessible for a future Buff makes the work feel meaningful.

What does philanthropy mean to you?

Philanthropy means giving back to your community and making someone’s life just a little bit better. It can be something as small as holding the door for someone or giving them a compliment on a hard day, or something bigger such as creating and awarding a scholarship that helps ease the financial burden of college.

What advice would you give students or young alumni who want to make an impact but aren’t sure where to start?

You don’t need a big title or a lot of authority to make a meaningful difference. Impact doesn’t start with position; it starts with intention. Sometimes it’s as simple as donating a small amount to one of the many scholarships here at CU, showing up to volunteer at move-in or graduation, or reconnecting with a program that shaped your own experience as a student.

Real change rarely comes from one huge, headline-making gesture. More often, it’s built through a collection of small, consistent contributions of time, energy and resources from numerous individuals. Start with what genuinely matters to you and take one step. From there, the impact naturally grows.

Looking ahead, what kind of legacy of giving do you hope to help build at �鶹��Ѱ��Boulder?

I hope to encourage a community here at �鶹��Ѱ��that’s rooted in collective collaboration and fosters a genuine sense of belonging for all students. To me, being a Buff isn’t just a four-year experience; it’s a lifelong identity. If we can create a culture where students feel supported, seen, and invested in, they’ll carry that with them and want to give back, strengthening what it means to be a Forever Buff.

March is Buffs All In when �鶹��Ѱ��Boulder celebrates the impact we can achieve through collective giving. At its heart, philanthropy is about people coming together and supporting causes that are meaningful to them.

Philanthropy builds a community of support where students are part of something bigger together. It is in action all around �鶹��Ѱ��Boulder, fostering Buff pride and making our campus a better place.

To demonstrate the power of collective action and giving back, we asked different philanthropic student leaders to share their stories of impact and the ways they are building �鶹��Ѱ��Boulder’s culture of giving — one action, one donation and one event at a time.

How did you get involved in your current position?

Bustindui: “I wanted to be part of something bigger than myself on campus. I’ve always been drawn to leadership and initiative, and when I saw the opportunity to contribute, I stepped up. I believe that if you care about your community, you don’t wait for someone else to act. You take responsibility and help make it happen.”

Gaydos: "I have been involved with Special Olympics for nearly a decade. When I transferred to �鶹��Ѱ��Boulder, I made it my mission to create a Special Olympics program. I helped get this club off the ground, but it could not be where it is today without students and community members continuously showing up and dedicating their time to the success and wellbeing of the club. "

Matthews: “I got involved by reaching out to the head of the non-profit to see if Letters of Love was still affiliated at CU. After learning it wasn’t, I took the initiative this past fall to contact campus organizations like CUSG and CSI to follow the steps to complete the reinstatement process. Eventually, I was able to complete the entire reinstatement process to proudly make Letters of Love a recognized student organization at �鶹��Ѱ��Boulder again.”

What does philanthropy mean to you?

Hadel: “Philanthropy is about giving back to causes that have personal significance but also allows people to learn from and become more aware of prevalent issues that affect the people in our communities.”

Gaydos: “Philanthropy means using your time, skills and voice to create opportunities for others. It’s not just about donating money; it’s about showing up consistently and investing in the people around you. It’s about building relationships within your community.”

Dunlap: “Philanthropy means giving back without the expectation of recognition or a reward in return. It means doing something for the good of your community. Nothing compares to seeing the direct difference you’ve made in someone else’s life, no matter how small the action may seem.”

Matthews: “Philanthropy means utilizing leadership and membership to create a meaningful impact for a greater cause. I’ve seen how small acts of kindness, like writing a letter, can make someone’s day and make them feel truly seen as well as cared for. Philanthropy isn’t just a singular event or requirement to me; it’s a mindset rooted in empathy and collective action.”

What do you see as the impact of philanthropy on �鶹��Ѱ��Boulder as a community?

Bustindui: "Philanthropy strengthens �鶹��Ѱ��by creating unity beyond academics and social groups. It gives students a shared purpose. When organizations rally around a cause, it builds empathy, leadership and accountability. It also shifts the narrative, showing that students aren’t just here to study or socialize, but to contribute and make a difference in Boulder and beyond.”

Ceria: “Philanthropy allows our �鶹��Ѱ��Boulder community to feel more united through the common goal of creating a campus that is accessible to all people. With �鶹��Ѱ��Special Olympics, we create a space where people can connect with others through sports and the common goal of growing as an athlete, being friends to all and building others' confidence on and off the court.”

Dunlap: “It brings people together. �鶹��Ѱ��is a huge campus, and it is easy to feel small, but being involved in something that directly brings the community together makes you feel more connected. It even just provides you with another person to recognize and smile at!”

Matthews: “Philanthropy tremendously strengthens �鶹��Ѱ��Boulder as a community by creating connections across different organizations and communities. When students come together to support a cause they truly care about, it creates an amazing community rooted in shared values rather than competition. It helps remind us as students that we’re part of something much bigger, and when we all come together we can make a big impact.”

What can students do now to get involved or give back?

Bustindui: “Everyone can engage in philanthropy; all they need to do is be willing and take action. Students can begin by volunteering at events, going to fundraisers or joining service-oriented organizations. To make an impression, you don't need a title. Being present on a regular basis counts.”

Gaydos: “In many ways, showing up is giving back. Your time, energy and consistency are what make programs like �鶹��Ѱ��Special Olympics possible. The connections and sense of belonging our members experience come directly from students who commit to being there for them.”

Dunlap: “Join a philanthropic club! There are so many, and we often attempt to collaborate, so there is definitely something for everyone! Even just showing up once will make a huge difference.”

Whether you’re returning for Alumni Weekend, call Boulder home or planning a weekend getaway, there’s no better place to revisit this spring than the �鶹��Ѱ��. From campus favorites to new discoveries, here are a few ways to reminisce and reconnect.

1. Folsom Field

Grab your tickets for this year’s AT&T Black & Gold Day, April 11. Rain, snow or shine, you can watch the spring game while you celebrate, kick back and enjoy classic stadium food with fellow Buffs.

2. Colorado Shakespeare Festival

The Mary Rippon Outdoor Theatre is back after last year’s renovations, welcoming audiences once again. The Colorado Shakespeare Festival returns to the iconic open-air venue for a season of drama, romance and unforgettable evenings set against the Flatirons.

3. �鶹��Ѱ��Boulder Student Recreation Center

Whether you’re squeezing in a workout, playing pickleball or tennis on the rooftop or taking a dip in the Buff Pool, the Rec Center is a campus staple.

4. Limelight Hotel Boulder and Moxy Boulder

Check out these two fantastic hotels right across from campus. Both are great places to stay for Alumni Weekend with discounted rates. The Limelight Hotel even features a new �鶹��Ѱ��Book Store to grab some fresh Buffs gear.

After a walk around The Hill and a visit to your old college house, stop by this iconic restaurant and see if you can find your name somewhere written on the walls.

7. Hellems Arts and Sciences Building

Stop by the newly reopened Hellems Building, a project two years in the making. Designed with sustainability and student success in mind, the revitalized space reflects CU’s Arts and Sciences commitment to a liberal arts education.

8. Farrand Field

Lay out a towel and enjoy a picnic lunch with the perfect mountain view. And don’t forget a now-and-then photo under the Farrand Field arch.

Travel doesn’t have to just be about seeing new places — it’s about connecting with people, exploring passions and creating memories that last a lifetime. Few experiences capture that spirit better than Roaming Buffs trips, where �鶹��Ѱ��alumni gather to explore the world together.

Connections that last

Take Libby Martinson, who graduated in 1970, and Phil Davis from the class of 1968, whose story began on a Roaming Buffs trip to Iceland in 2024.

“You never know; you could meet the second love of your life on one of these trips,” Libby said with a smile.

That unexpected Reykjavik encounter sparked a partnership that has taken them around the globe, from the Panama Canal to Costa Rica, and traveling with Roaming Buffs again to Southern Africa this March. “One of my favorite things is the people we’ve bonded with and stayed in touch with for the last two years,” Libby added.

Phil, a third-generation Buff, agreed: “Everything is top-notch — just beautiful. The service is great. You keep meeting new people and keep seeing new places.”

A journey years in the making

For others, Roaming Buffs trips are a chance to fulfill lifelong dreams. Roy Blackwood, a retired ancient history professor from Louisiana who graduated from �鶹��Ѱ��Boulder in 1972, embarked on the trip of a lifetime to Egypt and the Eternal Nile this past fall alongside his wife, Carolyn Blackwood.

“Being there is so much different than reading about it in a book,” Roy reflected. “It was deeper and richer than I could have ever imagined.”

From hot air balloon rides over the Valley of the Kings to the peaceful appeal of the Nile, every moment was made unforgettable by their guide, Reda Teima, who brought Egypt’s history vividly to life.

Roy summed it up simply: “Reda made a good trip, a truly great one.” For the Blackwoods, the experience was “overwhelming in the best way and everything we’ve been waiting to see for years.”

Solo travel, made easy

Solo travelers like Pete Wennermark, a 1962 graduate, also find that Roaming Buffs trips offer the perfect balance of independence and structure.

“Since I’ve gotten older, I like a more organized tour — guides who know what they’re doing,” he said. “It’s good to go on a trip with other �鶹��Ѱ��alumni — it’s fun to meet people and see what other �鶹��Ѱ��alumni have done with their lives and expand my knowledge of different places.”

A former Marine who spent much of his youth aboard ships, Pete found the boat portion of the Canary Islands trip especially nostalgic and meaningful. From classic hotels to small, well-appointed ships, Pete notes that they didn’t cut corners. “The guides were totally knowledgeable and made sure nobody was left behind,” he said.

“People are basically the same all over the world,” Phil observed.

“Everybody has the same wants and needs. We’re all just living our lives and being part of this global community,” added Libby.

Cheer on the Buffs at Black and Gold Day

Get your first look at the 2026 Colorado Buffaloes football team during this year’s AT&T Black & Gold Day on April 11. With new faces joining returning talent, this open practice and scrimmage is the perfect chance to see the next chapter of Buffs football take shape at Folsom Field.

Gates open at 11 a.m., and on‑field action begins at 1 p.m. Admission is free, but tickets must be claimed starting March 3 at 10 a.m.

In addition to the spring game, fans can enjoy family‑friendly activities throughout the day, including Field Day presented by Children’s Hospital Colorado, the Jr. Buffs Spirit Clinic and opportunities to meet the team for autographs and photos. See Hellems Reimaged at the reopening celebration

Take part in the next chapter of a beloved campus landmark as Hellems reopens its doors after an extensive renovation. Home of the Humanities in the College of Arts and Sciences, Hellems has long been a place where students discover new ideas, explore big questions and find community. From exploring American culture through the lens of baseball to examining the complexities of the human condition, generations of Buffs chimed in with the classes that made a lasting impact. Somewhere between lecture halls, late-night study sessions and those “aha” moments, students gained new ideas and perspectives that helped shape who they are today.

Across the years and life experiences, Buffs still find themselves looking back on their �鶹��Ѱ��Boulder classes.

Deviance in Society: A campus legend

Across the board, Forever Buffs fondly recalled Deviance in Society, taught by Dr. Patti Adler. The course explored how deviance is socially constructed, how individuals come to adopt a deviant identity and cope with associated stigma, and how deviant acts, lifestyles, relationships and careers are socially organized.

Alumni described it as unforgettable and often the most talked-about class on campus. Sean Makulowich, a 2006 fine art graduate, shared that it was one of his most thought-provoking classes. And Christine Lazette, who graduated in 2000, said: “Such a fascinating class and done so well by Patti. Loved it!”

Emily Rydin, a 2007 English major, remembered just how coveted the course was, adding: “This was such a great class and so hard to get into! I remember all my friends bragging when they finally got into it!”

America Through Baseball: History meets home plate

Another �鶹��Ѱ��Boulder classic course, America Through Baseball, had alumni reminiscing about how it blended history, culture and America’s pastime in unexpected ways. One alum reflected on the class with Professor Tom Zeiler as a valuable and enjoyable break from their regular classes.

Stephen Reamy, from the class of 2006, joked that he tried every single semester to get into the class. Another alum backed him up by adding that their course attendance was perfect, proof that some courses were simply worth the wait.

General Chemistry I: A Nobel introduction to science

Some classes left their marks because of the extraordinary people who taught them.

Debbie Payne Hurst, class of 1994, recalled General Chemistry I with Thomas Cech shortly after he won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry. “I was in awe of the fact that my entry level chem class was being taught by a Nobel Prize winner,” she shared.

Ecology and Design: Learning in nature’s classroom

One particularly resonant Colorado class was Snow Hydrology, fondly remembered by Adam Dodge, an environmental studies major from the class of 1998, and Evan Tooley, a 2020 economics major.

Another standout was Ecology and Design. Stephen Hofmeir, a 1996 graduate, recalled a self-guided field trip along Boulder Creek as his first assignment, calling it “a great way to learn about ecology in one of nature’s masterpieces.”

Biomechanics: When class changes your career

Biomechanics also proved transformative. Jim Fuchs, a 2002 mechanical engineering graduate, credits the course with changing the direction of his career. “This course opened my eyes to the Med Tech field and fascinated me to think of the body as a machine,” he said.

Michelle Klaren, a 2002 �鶹��Ѱ��Boulder graduate who continued her education at the �鶹��Ѱ��Anschutz Medical Campus and is now an orthopedic specialist physical therapist, echoed that sentiment. She recalled how her Biomechanics class even paused for the Olympic torch relay in 2002. Not only was that historic moment memorable, but she still uses the lessons from the course daily to help patients understand how their bodies move.

Astronomy: A lifetime of looking up

Finally, some classes left alumni looking up at the world around them. Astronomy stood out as a lifelong companion for many Forever Buffs. RJ Griscom, who graduated in 1979, reflected that more than 50 years later: “No matter where I am in the world, seeing something familiar in the night sky reminds me where I am on the planet, and that I am home.”

Whether you graduated decades ago or will graduate this spring, �鶹��Ѱ��Boulder classes last a lifetime. Thanks to incredible instructors, fellow Buffs and unforgettable classroom experiences, these courses continue to shape how we think, work and see the world long after we leave �鶹��Ѱ��Boulder.

From Folsom Field to Lumen Field, Forever Buff Cassidy Davis (StComm’23) has built a career from historic football seasons and meaningful mentorship relationships.

Learning the power of Buff connections early, Cassidy began her journey as an intern with �鶹��Ѱ��Athletics, where she took full advantage of opportunities to learn from �鶹��Ѱ��staff, faculty and alumni mentors. Today, she’s a corporate partnerships coordinator with the Seattle Seahawks, contributing to the organization during its landmark 50th anniversary season.

Along the way, Cassidy discovered just how small the sports world can be with the help of a few familiar faces, and just how far the Forever Buffs network reaches.

What shaped your �鶹��Ѱ��Boulder journey?

To work with the incredible team at �鶹��Ѱ��Athletics was the pivotal moment for me in choosing the direction I wanted to take in my career.

My time as a marketing and fan experience intern for �鶹��Ѱ��Athletics was the most impactful experience I was a part of. As one of my first introductions to sports, this role kickstarted my love for the industry and taught me the ins and outs of marketing across multiple teams. Starting this role in 2022 and ending with my graduation, I was able to see the transformation of the school’s program from being a 1-11 football team to welcoming Coach Prime and becoming one of the most talked about collegiate teams in the country.

What has it been like to be a part of the Seattle Seahawks organization during their Super Bowl bound season?

Absolutely unreal. I feel incredibly blessed to have the opportunity to go to the Super Bowl just two years into my career. The team’s success this year has created one of the most exciting work environments I’ve ever been part of. To experience such a historic playoff run during our 50th season is a beautiful story that I’ve had the privilege to help tell alongside my teammates.

As a corporate partnerships coordinator, my job is to help position our partners at the forefront of one of the most anticipated moments in sports. Doing this during such an important anniversary season has shifted my day-to-day role toward building on the legacy of an incredible team — one that will be celebrated and reshared by Hawks fans for years to come.

How has mentorship influenced your career in sports?

To succeed in the sports industry, mentorship is essential to positioning yourself as a competitive applicant. Mentors give you the opportunity to build on your network and can give you advice from the perspective of someone who has once been in your shoes.

Dawn Doty taught me the power of sharing words of encouragement and advice to those who are reaching for their dreams. Her mentorship to me as both my professor and friend during my college career has inspired me to mentor students in my post-graduate career. 

Mike Davies (Jour’94) was a guest speaker in one of my college classes who took the time to personally mentor me through my post-grad application process. He taught me the importance of maintaining connections as I’ve learned that sports is an incredibly small world! From giving me a chance to work my first NFL game in college as a FOX Sports Production Assistant, to connecting me with his network while applying for jobs — we still have the pleasure of working together whenever FOX Sports comes to town for a Hawks game.

Is there a recent sports trend that you’ve found especially interesting, exciting or meaningful? 

I am incredibly excited to see the NFL’s continuous expansion into an international sport. Over the past several years, the Seahawks have been granted marketing rights in New Zealand, Australia and Germany, expanding our fanbase in a way we’ve never seen before.

To see this sport grow across countries is so fun to be a part of as it opens up entirely new opportunities for partnerships and experiences that our fans can be a part of. I’m looking forward to continuing to see this expansion grow to countries who are just now being introduced to the world of football!

Are there any behind-the-scenes insights from your time in the sports industry that Buff fans might find surprising?

Almost always when a team wins a championship, the entire staff receives the same championship ring that players get!

Who is an artist that you would like to see at a future Super Bowl Halftime performance?

I’m a country girl at heart, so I would say either Luke Combs or Morgan Wallen! 

What advice would you share with Forever Buffs in sports and beyond?

If you’re looking to get a start in the sports industry, figure out a way where you can add value! Whether you’re freshly out of college or 10 years into your career, there is always a way you can position yourself as applicable for a role in this industry. Use your experiences as ways to bring new perspectives to a team. You will never achieve your dream job if you don’t try!

From Boulder to global climate action, read on to learn how mentorship fuels a lifelong journey of impact.

Debora “Debbie” Ley (MCivEngr’02) remembers the moment she knew �鶹��Ѱ��Boulder was the right place for her. As a participant in Sandia National Laboratories’ One Year on Campus scholarship program, she visited �鶹��Ѱ��Boulder, met with faculty and felt an immediate sense of connection.

“It was the people and the environment,” Ley said. “The experience of meeting faculty and the culture of support made a lasting impression.”

That sense of belonging, fostered by an early mentor who guided her through her first year, became the foundation for a career rooted in service, collaboration and global impact.

Today, Ley coordinates the update of the Nationally Determined Contribution 3.0 and the National Climate Change Action Plan for the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources of Guatemala. Since graduating from �鶹��Ѱ��Boulder, her work has focused on rural electrification projects and reducing energy poverty in rural Central America and Mexico.

Since 2006, she has also served as a professional partner with Engineers without Borders, the organization founded by �鶹��Ѱ��Boulder’s Professor Bernard Amadei.

In recent years, her focus has centered on the science-policy-practitioner interface, examining how these scientific assessments can be used at the local level and how local action can inform policy and research.

“What I find meaningful is how these scientific processes can inform policy processes while also improving action in communities,” Ley said. “[That includes] supporting most vulnerable and marginalized populations, for example, people with disabilities and how even inclusive climate action can leave people behind.”

Looking back, Ley credits �鶹��Ѱ��Boulder for shaping her approach to teamwork, community and community engagement in the classroom and beyond.

What we learned in class had real applicability in local communities, and there was a culture at �鶹��Ѱ��Boulder of helping each other,” said Ley. “Even after graduation, we’ve maintained bonds, friendships and have continued to work together.”

She also found a home away from home in the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers/Latinos in Science and Engineering (SHPE/MAES).

Throughout her academic and professional career, mentorship has remained central to her growth. Ley points to several mentors at �鶹��Ѱ��Boulder and Sandia National Laboratories for helping shape her path.

“Thanks to Thanks to Dr. Frank Figueroa, Dr. Max Harcourt, Dr. Jan Kreider, Dr. Michael Brandemuehl and Dr. Paul Klimas,” said Ley. “I’m a better engineer and scientist, and I so appreciate them mentoring me.”

From learning to manage challenges, navigate difficult situations and build trust with rural communities, Ley says mentorship taught her the value of listening and character, ultimately shaping her leadership.

“They shared empathy, trustworthiness and the ability to inspire, helping me believe in myself.”

Mentorships’ lasting impact has also inspired her commitment to mentoring others.

“I’ve had — and still have — great mentors who have helped shape me and guide me,” Ley said. “I strongly believe the mentoring scheme is something we can all benefit from. I want my mentees to take away advice, guidance and confidence. In some cases, I’ve been lucky, and these mentors became good friends.”

For those seeking mentorship at any stage in their journey, Ley encourages them to look for people who are honest, approachable and strong listeners.

“Make sure your mentor knows how to inspire and empower you. My mentors have been my role models,” she said.
